Sansui SR-626

10/10 by chastehel

I came by my SR-626 by way of adventure. I was touring abandoned homes with a writer friend and saw the TT on its side in the corner of a bedroom in a house that suffered fire damage. I took it home, cleaned it up, plugged it in, turned it, and the platter spun. I fiddled with the pitch control, hit it with some DeOxit, and the platter sped up and slowed down. The platter mat was warped, so I heated it in the over at 250 degrees for about an hour and it flattened out. I got my hands on an inexpensive Stanton cartridge and installed it. The player worked! That was over 5 years ago. In time I upgraded the cartridge to an AT-440MLa and put it on some isolation pads but have done nothing else. The speed is rock solid, there is no noise, and it just works. I’ve considered upgrading to a new TT, but I’m not sure what I’d have to spend to “improve” on the player that I have. I think I have a great unit, and if you have the chance to get one at a yard sale, flea market, or swap meet, get it.
