Rega Planar 2

Rega Planar 2

10/10 by Bejoux

With its elastic bands and Formica and door-stop feet, it was like it put together in someone's garden shed, but it worked and sounded great! I still have mine, now going into its 41st year! The Acos derived tonearm was beautifully made and sounded great with medium compliance carts., like Nagaoka MP20. Incidently, no need to replace the bias drive belt with an expensive kit - I made one from an appropriately toothed cable tie, cut to length & spliced into a band with UHU adhesive. It work just like the original (but doesn't decay).

I've always had a soft spot for the Rega P25 which i found beautiful with the wood trim so I picked up a Planar 2 with wood trim as a reasonable facsimile fairly inexpensive on a buy & sell . As it didn't come with an arm I bought another Planar 2 with a RB250 and swapped the arm , sub platter and dust cover over added a Bias 2 , white belt and I must say it sounds awesome , even better than my old Well Tempered Turntable that I owned for 10 years .The nice thing about Rega's and the number 1 reason for getting this table is the aftermarket pieces available to bring it up to date with the newer Rega's .Tangospinner , Groovetracer ,Lp Turntables and others all offer something to upgrade your table. There's no point in owning a table that doesn't have any support for upgrades as they come along from tweakers who come up with new ideas to improve the sound experience.

I've had my RB 2 for about a couple of months and am quite happy with it from the perspective that its an easy to use unit and setup is astoundingly simple. Mine has the acrylic platter, RB200 arm and Supex SD 900 Super cartridge. I've found by having a record clamp on truly cleans up an lot of unwanted sonic issues but still trying to remove an occasional bass thump. Its a wonderful introductory TT. My other TT (Oracle Dephi II with all the upgrades) totally outshines this unit, but its in storage as I am away on a long term out of town job. The Rega solves my immediate need to push some vinyl (feed the beast) and I've had no regrets grabbing this used unit. Fun piece of machinery. The rating of 5 is in my opinion fair and objective considering whats available. This a very dependable unit and one that merits serious consideration if your getting back into LP's. If you do purchase a similar product I would highly recommend getting some neoprene pucks to place under the rubber feet, new belt, service the arm, acrylic platter and if your so inclined upgrade the arm to the RB250.

Again, great little TT for the money and will do the job quite satisfactorily.
