Hitachi HT-354

Hitachi HT-354

9/10 by Todd141

I just purchased one of these and have been playing it non-stop for the past week. I put a new AT95E cartridge on it, set the VTF to 2 and the anti-skate to about the same and all is great! Sounds fantastic, holds its speed perfectly, too. I really like these older tables, both for the cost and the fun-factor. I'm a firm believer that unless you want to spend a lot of money, these vintage tables sound every bit as good as all the 300 - 700 tables out there. My opinion of course....

I just acquired a Project/One DR-661 and it appears to be identical to the Hitachi HT-354 in almost every detail. Project/One is not to be confused with Pro-Ject Audio, a different company entirely. Project/one was the house brand sold by Playback Stereo, a chain in the Chicago area in the 1970s & 1980s. Playback Stereo's owner Shelby Young had turntables made to his specifications by CEC, the manufacturer of many well-known Japanese turntable brands including Hitachi. This does seem like a decent, though unremarkable auto-return turntable. I like that all the controls, including cueing, are on the front and outside the dust cover. The plastic headshell on the Project/One version seems cheap.
