Dual CS530 -- can't remove headshell from tonearm

Post by bigs23 » 14 Jan 2016 15:39

Guys,
My virgin post! I have a question, and will probably feel like an idiot when I get the answer, however here it goes. I recently bought a Dual CS 530 that has the original cartridge and stylus on it and I want to replace it, but I'm having a hell of a time removing the headshell from the tonearm. Does anyone have any secrets before I use good ole fashion brute force?

Thanks

This might help. I think all Duals use a sled/carrier system to mount cartridges.

Very helpful, but my issue is getting the headshell into my hand to work on it -- it will not come out of the tonearm

According to your service manual, you should be able to turn a collar behind the headshell and pull the shell straight forward. However, it is a model that MAY have been glued in by a previous owner to account for wear and tear causing the shell to not sit level or to keep the contacts working. If this is the case, you are stuck using the cartridge supplied and need to only replace the stylus. Cartridges rarely fail and the one supplied is a good for your turntable. If the collar does not turn in either direction, it is seized by age or glue and any attempt to free it is going to either render your machine useless or you are going to learn how to replace the whole arm assembly.

Thanks for the info -- seems pretty stuck in there and I just don't want to yank it and ruin it. This is a 2nd turntable for upstairs. Any reco on replacement stylus for the stock cartridge. Ortofon OM10?

You can Google LP Gear, William Thakker (European dealer, Ortofon specialist), TurntableNeedles.com, JICO and a few others I am forgetting. They are almost all quite reputable and the deal is comparison shopping. I would just get the right stylus for your cartridge and any reputable website will give you a cross reference. I don't believe the OM10 will fit, but could be wrong. I think it will start with DNS. William Thakker will know and I think it is on his website.

The Dual 530 uses the standard 1/2 inch cartridge mounting system. It is still possible to change cartridges, just as it is possible on any Rega tonearm, which has a fixed headshell.
Use care removing the clips and wires from the gcartridge. Use small needle-nose pliers to grip the solder tags on the end of the tubular clips. Do not pull the wires.
The 530 will not have the proprietary mount sometimes found on older Duals. Therefore an OM10 or OM20 stylus should fit.

Cheers,
Alec
