Anybody know if these are supposed to be decent?
(Better than my Polkaudio 5JRs?)

A guy up the street is selling a pair for 30 bucks.

If you know anything about 'em, please respond quickly.

Generally the main complaint with Bose stuff is that it's overpriced. For $30 though I'd buy them and stick 'em on ebay if I didn't like them.

For some reason the original ones (see below) are great for background music in bars and shops.

Come to think of it ... I just remember a fashion chain in Madrid that had Sonus Fabers in all of its stores!

you had to suffer with the Yamaha's.
sure the Bose are a welcome relaxation....
but the Bose are so far away from decent sound that it is crazy.
backround music from speakers in another room,
i bet they sound ok for that.
spare us from the torture of Bose speakers otherwise.

regards,
bas

The only good thing about Bose 301's is that they may be the least offensive of all Bose speakers. With that said, they are still awful.

However, if you like them that's your business. Just don't expect to get any reinforcement or validation of your decision to buy and use them.

I might be tempted to buy them if the price was no more than $10. I know there are plenty of deaf people who will pay up to $100 or more for them. I'd sell them immediately then use the money to buy something that sounds good.

Friends don't let friends buy Bose.

IMO:
Polks worst speaker is an order of magnitude better. I'm not a Polk fan either.

THat is what I was thinking.

Interesting. The 301 is far from the best speaker in the world and is (was) rather overpriced, but if they are set up correctly can sound absolutely brilliant. They need to be a bit away from the rear wall to stop the bass from booming, and need to be positioned within suitable proximity to the side walls for the direct/reflect to work well. If this is done they are capable of very good imaging and a rather surprising soundstage. The speakers "disappear". You hear the music, not the speakers. Judging by the comments above, there is a number of people who have never taken the time to listen to them, but would rather jump on teh Bose Bashing Bandwagon.
