I have just read a product info/review on Tascam US-1xx series USB interfaces.

With a price tag of USD (100-160), Tascam US-100 drew my attention but it is limited to 16bit-48kHz.

US-122 mkII is capable of 24bit-96kHz, and comes equipped with CuBase LE4 asking for USD (130-200).

Meanwhile, aside possible other enhancements US-144 mkII has a S/PDIF input and output (CuBase LE4 bundled), asking for USD (150-270).

I bought one of this for 100€ (it's even cheaper on some other EU countries because of lower tax).

I opened the box.

A/D, D/A: AKM 4626AVQ - http://www.akm.com/prodfolder-codec.asp?p=AK4626A

OP-AMPs: NJR 4580 - http://semicon.njr.co.jp/njr/hp/fileDow ... diaId=8908

After some recording/listening tests:
- resulting sound is (too) bright compared to what I've got from either Pro-Ject PhonoBox + E-MU 0404 USB or Terretec iVinyl USB. Maybe connection impedance/capasitance aren't correct for my Technics SLQ2 + EPC 205 CMK3.
- some hum was present when turntable GND was connected under screw intend for GND ... by connecting the GND wire to I/O port GND fixed hum issue.

Otherwise looks like the device is well constructed using metal case and good components.

I mailed some questions to ESI support regarding phono pre-amp specs.

Not a complete interface, but Uwe Beis sells a very affordable kit for a standalone ADC with toslink, coax, and AES/EBU output. All sample rates are cathered for, and SNR/dynamic range is up there with the very best.

MOTU have a new product out.

http://www.motu.com/products/motuaudio/microbook/summary.html

Interesting that similarly priced products from competitors usually offer sample rates above 44 or 48. The software bundle looks good though. 7 band parametric EQ and a compressor.

AVID card/software. www. AVID.com I got mine dirt cheap as a "close-out" for their newer product. Lots of software bundled with it. $ pro-sumer, I'd say. It will do 192Khz/32 bit sampling, and a whole lot more. I think I bought the software and they gave me the card...
