Even the motor unit on the old manual SL-1500 is more than superb. Outside of the 33 1/3-Off-45 switch (on some examples has had issues) a superb turntable. Excellent stock tonearm, to boot. I love my example, and I hope to enjoy my example for many years to come. goatbreath, I enjoy your commentary on the new SL-1500C to boot. Scots may be thrifty, but they spend money when it's worth spending money and it's superb.

I totally agree. My original 1500 is a great turntable. When I bought it a few years ago the speeds were all over the place but that problem was instantly cured by liberal application of DeOxIt to the power/speed switch and the pitch knobs. It's been rock steady ever since. Not bad for a 42 year old piece of equipment that wasn't maintained or stored well by its previous owner!

Crutchfield.com now has it available for pre-order but the page doesn't list an ETA for when it will begin shipping. Hopefully it will be here in the States in time for the Christmas shopping season. For those who can't wait, the new SL-1200 Mk7 is available today at Guitar Center and Sweetwater.com.

The 1500c is available in the US. I think just select places. I received one end of last week, already replaced the Ortofon with a AT VM540ML and replaced the rubber mat with a Funk Achromat.

got shipping notification of mine yesterday and it arrived today. replaced the Ortofon with a ATVM740ML on a Jelco headshell, replaced the rubber mat with a Herbie's, added a record weight and plugged it into a PowerVar. i am mightily impressed. glad to see others in the US are receiving theirs

mc1b is the second person in this thread that change the original mat for a custom one. Is the original one so bad?

I don't really know if the original Technics platter mat is bad or if the Herbies mat is truly better but no matter, some people just have to have audio jewelry.

Just being cynical old me,

Historically, Technics rubber mats were some of the best mats available. Technics did some serious research and development into the design, composition, and construction of their mats. I've put Technics mats on several non-Technics turntables and noticed an audible improvement.
