Good stylus retailers

Post by vinylsgreat » 11 Jul 2019 03:01

Hello! My first post.
Intro.....I have two tables; a Technics SL3300, and a Marantz 6100.
The 6100 was my younger brother's that he gave me about 10 years ago. He passed this year at age 59. I placed it in service as a tribute to him. It has a Stanton 500 (also has an extra 500 MkIV). I would like to replace the stylus in the 500 with a D5100E. As I have an extra 681EEE as well, I was looking at the D6800SE. Both these stylus choices do not track at ultra-low levels, and I figured they'd be a good choice for this turntable, as it wasn't really designed for 1 1/2 gram tracking (IMO....from what I've read).
I want to buy now, of course, but looking at all the suppliers online, I am confused about who to trust for a decent price for a decent stylus.
What's the general consensus here on price/quality ratio companies?
I am confused on what to do. On one hand, the 500 is probably a good enough cartridge for the Marantz, but if I could buy a decent stylus (at a decent price) for the 681EEE, I might just spring for the D6800SE replacement.
Thanks for your insight!

Also, does anybody know who manufactures the Stanton replacements for Parts Express?

All my styli I buy from Gary@thevoiceofmusic.com. I trust no one else and he's never steered me wrong in the few years I've done business with him...Many others here feel the same way about Gary! :D Of course, I have also bought styli from turntableneedles.com and they were very good, as well...LP Gear and Carole's Needles on EBay are other options...For the crowd overseas in Europe, think William Thakker...Then, of course, if you have the $$$ to spend, you could possibly contact JICO directly...There is also Jerry Raskin, The Needle Doctor in our own member Dasher's neck of the woods...Back in the day, I also bought from a seller on GEMM known as Needlefinder...Sadly GEMM is no longer with us, but still, a few thoughts to consider... :-k

I checked out that thread for the Pfanstiehl 4822-dee, but I don't think the tonearm on my 6100 is in the super-low-mass category. I need something that will track at about 3 to 3.5 grams.

Stanton no longer manufactures genuine styli nor cartridges. Also, Stanton styli are very tough to manufacture, and few aftermarket companies are even close, and that's the 2-5 gram heavy duty styli at that. Jico is the best of the aftermarkets, but expect to track it heavier than a genuine Stanton stylus. Reality.

Just ordered a D5100E from LP Gear. It's a Japanese replacement.

This thread reminds me of how much I miss Garage-A-Records.

Yep. They're sorely missed. Besides thevoiceofmusic, the only place I can recommend is carole's needles on fleabay.

Certainly not our "friend" in Vegas.

Overseas, thakker seems to have a good reputation.
