Anyone out there who know the Denon DP-80/75 Really well?

Thanks! It was definitely a "labour of love". I can state with some certainty that my turntable quest has reached an end. Arms and carts will undoubtedly change in time (carts in particular), but the drive and plinth are all I could ask now.

I can certainly recommend a cartridge. I upgraded to it earlier this year and its a sweetheart.

The Ortofon Windfeld Ti is expensive but worth every cent. It is neutral, beautifully musical and handles anything you can throw at it. It is also very easy to align. The boron cantilever and Replicant 100 stylus projects out from the bottom of the front of the cartridge body. This makes aligning it to the protractor pattern child's play.

The stylus is simple to get set into the center of the alignment grid and the cantilever projects out in full view. A very simple alignment job.

Andre Jennings has a review of this cartridge in this month's The Absolute Sound.

Whatever you get, best of luck on the new DP80.

I've heard about that cart, a friend has (had?) one and he raved about it. I never know with him as he has so many expensive carts pass through I can't keep track!

The thing with the DP-80 and plinth is that I now have a platform to work from worthy of anything I might want to put on it. The Sumiko arm on the back is nothing amazing, but perfect for what I need it to be - casual listening/nostalgia carts/mono.

I cannot imagine you needing anything else for the foreseeable future. Even a well regarded 30K modern DD from respected mfgr is not matching panache of your creation.

Remember the beginning of this thread where I had a lovely drive that was dead? I have to remind myself it was a near-miss back then but that the "silver lining" is that I now have one that has been completely rebuilt by a master. It not only runs incredibly beautifully, but will continue to do so for the long term. I honestly can't imagine needing anything else - ever. Oh, I have and will have other tables, no doubt of that. This one will always be No.1.

Out of curiosity are you free floating the ground wire from the DP-80 or do you have it connected somewhere?

I have the ground from the drive connected to my PV-12 pre as suggested by the gent who rebuilt the drive. I got a new set of leads made up for the AC-400C from ultra-shielded/low capacitance Cardas microphone cable and don't seem to need a ground at all. The ground from the EPA-250 runs to the SUT and then one from the SUT to the pre. No hum, so it seems to have been the right path.

(silent with ground prongs bypassed) The DP80 so it wont trip my circuit breaker, which happens instantly if I connect up the DP80 ground wire to any ground in my system. Why I was asking.

Wow! I've never had anything that mystifying to deal with. The worst I had was my Braun PS-500 table which hummed like mad until I plugged it into the power outlet on the Accuphase E-202 I was running it with. Suddenly - dead silent, not a hint of noise of any sort!

My PV-12 has a grounded plug, the MV-45 doesn't. No hum, no ground loop. I had some issues now and again with various pieces before we rewired the house and ditched the old knob and tube that wasn't grounded.

The tube hum is definitely a ground loop issue. I resorted to adapter plugs after attempting a host of other suggestions and getting nowhere. Some argue ground loops are easy to defeat, but I struggled for months to get it out of my system to no avail. In the end the plugs were the saving grace, but it is controversial. If I suddenly stop posting those who rail against these may prove vindicated. :shock:

The DP80 I have no idea, possibly a wiring fault. Maybe I should open it up and have a glance around.

I had ground loops aplenty when my system was downstairs in a room where the old knob and tube hadn't been replaced yet (it has now, as of last week!). Upstairs with the new wiring there have never been any issues. My MV-34 has a bit of hum from the power transformer, but it is strictly through the air sound and no issue.
