Just found this.

Replaced by new model VM750SH

It's been only a couple of years since mlx was replaced by sa. No idea why they did this.

It is normal that manufacturers put a new model on the market, even if only look is changed and internal design is practically the same. They have to make money, but it is your choice if you would allow them to seduce you. Otherwise you can use 1979 cart with a new stylus, save money but manufacturer has nothing from you.:)

If you buy a stylus manufacturer has something from you because you bought new stylus no? :)

Yes, but styluses for vintage carts are practically all aftermarket, which means that original producer won`t get your money, but new manufacturers of generic styluses. :D

Audio Technica updated their cartridge range a while ago to “rationalise” the part numbering scheme (for example the 440MLx used to sit between the 120 and 150 part numbers and the 110 part number was a different range to the 100 and 120 model numbers). At the same time the plastic bodies were made to look more like the metal bodies. We now have the 5xx plastic bodies and 7xx metal bodies where the increasing number in the series match the increasing costs of styli and the styli will fit either body.

This all seems nice and logical but the more cynical amongst us (me) think the real reason was partly to hide the approx 30% price increase for similar styli/cartridges.

Also despite not changing the compliance specifications at all the recommended tracking forces were also increased.

If you can find a 440MLb, 150MLX or 150SA Stylus at the right price I would just use these rather than the VMN40ML or VMN50SH and please don’t look at the VMN60SLC pricing (It’s cheaper to buy a full MC (ATOC9/iii) if you want this “Special Line Contact” tip.

I have original AT440MLB and last summer I bought the new stylus VMN40. I think they are the same in therm of sound quality.

Yes, the AT150Sa was a current model for an unusually short time.

It replaced the AT150MLX in November 2015 and was replaced by the VM700 range in December 2016.

This site appears to have discontinued AT cartridges and Stylus.
