Garrard 4HF rheostat change.

Post by Thermonic » 10 Nov 2018 14:29

Hi guys this is my first post in here.
My old Garrard 4HF had issues with the pitch control.
When turning the control about half way it would short causing the main fusebox to trip. Not good.
Upon investigating to my horror I discovered the old units coils had fallen out

Upon going through the forum I ordered the RHS10KE
which I got off of fleabay for just under £30 including pp. Sorry I never got a chance to take photos of the install because my phone was on torch duty at 2am.
I needed a slighly thicker washer to get the unit to sit flush with the deck plate. Its sits a bit deeper than the original unit but maintains good clearance.
On top I couldnt fit the washer under the nut because there was just enough thread for the nut.
Trying to keep things as original as possible I took out the old pitch control shaft and cut the top bit off to make a knob for the new unit.

It sits a little higher than the original ans in hindsight I should have made it taller. But still I reckon Ive got away with it.

Thanks Guys. Plaka do you find the Ohmite runs cooler than the factory unit? I cant tell because my old unit ran hot due to it falling apart.

Terrible for me to admit, but I junked an otherwise very fair 4HF in the 80's because in storage, the pitch rheostat had crumbled away inside :( No internet then of course and no local knowledge base...

As I mentioned is my other post on a different topic.

When I replaced the speed controller housing I fitted it on some standoffs. This had a twofold result of making the spindle length approximately similar and hiding the fixing locknut. But it didn’t protrude further down than the spindle housing.

This was an Ohmite rheostat from the aforementioned trading site.

Here is my friends 4HF which I just fitted the new ohmite unit to. I used the original nuts with 2 washers as spacers. Come out good. Just got to do the knob like my one now. Ill fit the spacers in my one to when I get a chance.

The old colvern unit had been butchered at some time in its life. It was empty with a loose wire hanging off the bottom resistor. Not good. New one is so much better.

I added spacers to increase clearance and aid heat dissipation. The ohmite unit is larger than the colvern unit so I think this should do it.
