Onkyo TX-8220 (low volume)

Post by obi_juan85 » 12 Jan 2019 00:15

Hi fellas. I got on Christmas an Onkyo TX-8220 which after a thorough review I believe it is a better option than the Yamaha entry level receiver (one of the advantages was that the Onkyo has a Phono input). However once I installed all my setting I believe that the volume is rather low. In order to get a "good" volume for Phono I have to crank the volume up to 60/80, and even is not that loud on full volume (which I know I shouldn't do). For CDs and Turner the volume is better but it's still difficult to hear it untill it reaches 30-40/80. My setting is; receiver Onkyo TX-8220, Turntable U-Turn Orbit (with Grado Black1 cartridge), CD Player Sony CA80ES and Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 Speakers. I don't know if somebody else has had a similar case or if you could guide me. Thanks!

You do have it connected to phono, right?

Yes Lenjack. The TT is directly connected to the Phono input.

Some of the Onkyo AV receivers have the ability to change the volume per input. I'd adjust that, phono carts are pretty low output compared to CD players.

That would be discussed in the manual. I doubt that this one would have that function, as it is a $199 unit, and something like that would generally be reserved for pricer models.

Make sure the colored lead wires are on the correct pins on the back of the cartridge. Grado pinouts are a little different and can be confusing.

Thanks Dysmike but as Lenjack mentions I believe that as an entry level receiver it is not that advanced, however I´m going to write directly to Onkyo to see what could be happening. Thanks Dysmike and Lenjack for your feedback.

I would look and see if it needs a firmware update also.

Does it support FW updates via USB? I know my Onkyo stopped supporting network FW updates, and is ONLY USB now due to bricking issues on network updates.
