Ortofon OM10 Stylus

Post by donovan » 15 Jan 2019 20:18

Anyone tried the generics for this? I see some going for as little as $12 and don't want to spend $40 for OEM if not much difference in quality.

Hi. My own experience is that generics are of lower quality compared to the original. Made that mistake once. And hopefully others can learn from my mistake. In this case, original is the best value. Now, I’d definitely skip the OM10 and get at least an original OM20. OM20 is a good entry level Hifi stylus. Nude elliptical. OM10 is not, though very good for 12” maxi singles with a huge lead out wax. But not good for long sides. IGD is definitely a problem with OM10 and the other lower OMs (5, 3, omega).

Cheers.

I used to own a super OM10 with its genuine stylus and an aftermarket EVG STY10 stylus. The fit and finish on the EVG was terrible. The sound was edgy, not up to par with the original OM10. Also, IGD was a common problem with both styli.

My OEM OM10 performs pretty well on inner grooves. So does the Omega.(which is fine stylus and a steal with an Omega Body). Same stylus but the Omega is lower compliance. Profile pic is an OM10 on an Omega body. SH-4 Headshell.

Note: I did find a post from BMRR that he thought this Ortofon OM stylus was rubbish and sent it back for a refund.

I don't see the colombian origin in your link. In my opinion, the only way to improve the sound of those OM or Super OM
cartridges is to fit a 20, 30 or 40 styli on them. Some people say that the 20 is the best compromise, regarding its price and performance. Non branded styli may only result in downgrading, and the 10 stylus is already at the bottom of the hill.
