Philips GA212 - arm lift at end of record or not?
I just bought a Philips GA212 that seems to be in great condition. When I went to pick it up it was hooked up to a very nice system (NAD pre, Denon amp, Martin Logan speakers). It was demonstrated and it sounded quite good, all of the speeds worked, as did all of the switches and the cuing lever. When I got it home I tried it out and all was good, except that he motor stopped but the tonearm didn't lift up at the end of the record. The owner's manual says that the tonearm should lift at the end of the record and I owned a GA212 in the '70's and would have sworn that it did.
Should the GA212 lift the tonearm at the end of the record?
If it should, can anyone tell me how to make mine do that, or point me to a source that might?
As always, thanks in advance for any information provided.

Re: Philips GA212 - arm lift at end of record or not?
The 312 definitely lifts at the end with shut-off. I've definitely had 212s that only shut off, and didn't lift. I wonder if it's possible early 212s didn't have the lift feature, but later versions added it? They seemed to have modified these lines as they went. At least with the 312 they did. The early ones had "green" lights like the 212s, and later ones have red leds.

212 = autostop
312 = autostop + autolift
The US manual for the 212 is a combination of the 312 and 212 manual (according to the front page), but the operating instructions are for the 312.
The multi-language manual has the correct operating instructions for the 212.

eschanen - that must mean I had an early 312.
Japi - That explains pretty much everything else but my recollection of the one I had in the '70's. I don't think I really want to delve into the possible reason(s) for that!

Re: Philips GA212 - arm lift at end of record or not?
They don't lift at the end just shut off.....The GA312 lifts off at the end.......However the rumour seems to crop up that there could be GA 212s that do lift BUT I have never seen one......what I do believe is this Philips often rented out their designs to other manufacturers and the 212 or 312 might have been subject to this. Thus someone might see one that lifts off......however they look at the design and configuration and assume it is a GA212 but it is not it is either a 312 or a modified 212. The GA212 did have modification kits available.....the notable one is the 78 modification that has an extra black knob on the left....this together with a light switch filter modification enabled the table to play at 78......these are not that common but I have seen at least one.....now one wonders ......did they sell modification kits to auto lift? :D

(22)GC012 is the name of the turntable mechanism. It was sometimes built into all-in-one consoles. When supplied with its dedicated plinth and dust cover it is called 212.

Re: Philips GA212 - arm lift at end of record or not?
Should auto lift. I'd download the service manual and troubleshoot if you can. LED light path engages lift solenoid..
"The LED is coupled with an LDR. The tonearm has a mechanical 'flag' that breaks the light path between the LED and LDR as the cartridge approaches the end of the record. Once the path is broken, the solenoid is activated and the lift mechanism re-engages the tonearm."

You need to trace wires and voltages from the service manual. & check solenoid clearance adjustment. I'd Start a new thread.....Sorry I cant help. I am in process of fixing my 312. My problem is the tonearm wont stay down more than 30 seconds.. For me either the solenoid is bad or the LED, LDR ( light dependent resister) are bad or out of adjustment.

Re: Philips GA212 - arm lift at end of record or not?
First you need to determine if you have a 312 or a 212.
If you can use the arm lift when the turntable is off (platter not rotating), you have a 212.
