I need a Christmas recommendation...

Post by vinyl master » 10 Dec 2018 05:09

OK, guys...Another Christmas is upon us and all the rush and madness that goes along with it...But I've been thinking that I need to take a little time and reflect on the season a bit more...And so I'm looking for a recommendation or two from you guys...I hear the same old Christmas music all the time...The radio stations play all the common chestnuts, as well as the stores and restaurants, but it's just not moving my spirit...What I need is a really good album that reflects the season better and I've got an unusual request...Can you guys recommend a really good Christmas album, preferably on vinyl, with these three caveats???

I'm looking for...

1. A Christmas album featuring a HANDBELL orchestra or group

2. A Christmas album featuring a HANDBELL orchestra AND vocal choir to go along with it

or...

3. A Christmas album of tunes played on a GLASS HARMONICA

To give you an idea, here's something of what I am talking about...

So, what kinds of recommendations can you guys give me to get me into the spirit again? :-k

I did find this CD of William Zeitler...

https://www.amazon.com/Crystal-Christma ... B0000CGDB6

...but might there be any vinyl worth checking out of these instruments (glass harmonica and/or handbells) in action? :-k

Pure, amazing, ethereal, haunting, calming and beautiful are the adjectives I'm looking for, so what else fits my bill?

Hi Vinyl master,

If you want Christmas music played on a glass armonica, I think this is good. https://www.amazon.com/Crystal-Carols-D ... B00000AEZV

I don’t think it is available on vinyl, but the funny shiny disc sounds pretty good. You can’t beat the prices on some of those used sellers.

Here is another: https://www.discogs.com/The-Mastersound ... se/5729891

This is a West Coast Style Jazz group from the '50s. I have had the record from that time. It for sure sounds like '50s west coast jazz. If you like the MJQ you would like this group. I have had this record since probably the late '50s and it looks like I got it from the bargain bin as it has an original price of $5.98 on it as well as $1.49 which I suppose is what I must have paid. My copy is stereo and the fidelity is fair. I noticed some distortion and there seems to be ringing on some notes which kind of nails my ears. I played it again via my mono phono stage (still RIAA) and found it to be much better. I guess stereo was in its infancy then. The mono stage is good for things like this as well as the re-channeled for stereo stuff.

At any rate a nice record for the season. I'm glad this thread inspired me to drag it out.

It doesn't quite meet your strict parameters but I heard her do this live once and it was quite beautiful to hear.

Hi Vinyl master,

I do have a few.

The first is as common as Whipped Cream so I hesitate a bit, but I do think it is quite good. A Charlie Brown Christmas with the Vince Guaraldi Trio.

The next would be my favorite gutarist, Joe Pass - Six String Santa.

This gets a few plays each season:

Not exactly what I was looking for, but if anyone doesn't get into the proper holiday spirit after watching this one, you have no heart...
