Headshell is a little rough when tightening knurled tone arm collar

Post by mark79 » 16 Nov 2018 23:58

Hello All: I have the AT-LP1240 and gave my AT-LP120 to my sister's husband who helps us out with things around here. He knows everything about bicycles and built one from scratch for my Grandson and a very nice road bike for my son. I also helped him set the 120 up. Anyway, my problem is that I have several universal headshells and two Audio-Technica. I have the AT95EX, M44G, 680, 500 all aligned and mounted, but I've noticed lately that when I rotate or change them out, they go in and tighten a little rough. As I turn the nut, it grinds just a little, and I'm always very careful. I tried buffing the top of the pin-but it doesn't do any good. It's not a bad grind-but it's there and it bother's me. Has anyone dealt with this before and should I worry about it? I kinda have a mild tendency to OCD just a little when it comes to turntables. I like rotating out the carts. I also find myself really preferring the sound of conical needles. They seem to sound more natural. Thanks very much; Much Regards; Mark79

Forget the OCD, that roughness is a normal thing.
It's in the threads of the headshell collar.

I have found a few headshells with that pin sticking our just a bit too far, and snagging in the threads of the collar. I think about 1.7mm is the limit.
The pin is a press fit in its hole, so can be pressed in a bit more. I use a small pair of Vice-Grips, because one can limit the closure of the jaws, and the lever action gives good control.

Cheers,
Alec

As is always wise and effective with threaded attachments, back thread a half turn or so to make sure the threads engage cleanly, avoiding binding and cross-threading issues. :D

the after market technics like headshells have a larger pin, sometimes longer and the edges are sharp unlike original technics headshell, which feels smooth, so that pin may scrape the threads in the collar. once the threads are scratched, it may feels rough afterwards when tightening.
one of my technics 1200 is like that too.
if the pin is too long, don't force it into the collar, i use something to grind it a little shorter, not too short. otherwise, it may not reach the threads.

Dahoo, the problem really is in the insertion. I have had one actually fall out!
Grinding the top off might leave a sharp edge, but it would work.

Cheers,
Alec
