How can this be a good idea?
I spotted one of these for sale secondhand:
I've always thought it was essential to support the record with a platter. Can this be any good? It's super-expensive!

Hmm, not sure on anything to do with this. As a piece of mechanical art it looks nice but at the price you imply it would also have to perform and I can't comment on that...

Yes, it's beautiful, isn't it. It's made by Audio Deva. They have two models, this one is around £2000, and there's another which is close to £4000.
I guess my feeling is if it were a good idea to play your lps this way we could all do so by putting a 'puck' on the turntable to lift them off the surface. I've never seen anyone suggest this as a route to sonic nirvana...

£2k and an Ortofon OM cart but it doesn't specify which one. Preamp built in though! ;-)

Re: How can this be a good idea?
I have tried putting a CD on the platter, then the record, and a weight to hold it. A cheap and easy experiment, and it does not sound bad, but not what I use.MikeyB456 wrote: ↑14 Nov 2018 11:41Yes, it's beautiful, isn't it. It's made by Audio Deva. That's exactly what it is, nothing more.
Merely designed as "eye candy", for fools with money.

Hello,
It is a very poor design. Aesthetically, if this is your thing, it looks OK, but ironically, the same aesthetic could have been achieved with a full platter, just severely under cut at its outer edge. But the designer didn't take the opportunity as clearly they were not thinking. A poor design.
Mike.

If an undercut plinth is your thing check out a Simon Yorke TT. The Library of Congress uses custom Yorke TT's for archiving valuable and rare vinyl/shellac. IMO they are definitely works of mechanical art.Woodbrains wrote: ↑14 Nov 2018 18:04Hello,

I'm not trying to defend this - but I did find a review that waffled on about the designer's decision to not use a platter being due to the desire to avoid the unwanted "resonances" it would otherwise inevitably transmit into the vinyl sitting on it. Interesting point of view...

Then he is about 50 years behind the times. The idea of minimal platter contact with the vinyl to reduce undue noise/vibration/resonance had been tried and debunked many years ago. A good, solid contact with the platter by the record, is much more widely accepted as the best thing to do. Designer is misinformed or just BSing to justify his obsession.

Re: How can this be a good idea?
I definately agree with this. Some of the better TT's out there use a vacuum hold down on the vinyl.Woodbrains wrote: ↑14 Nov 2018 18:44Hello,MikeyB456 wrote: ↑14 Nov 2018 18:36I'm not trying to defend this - but I did find a review that waffled on about the designer's decision to not use a platter being due to the desire to avoid the unwanted "resonances" it would otherwise inevitably transmit into the vinyl sitting on it. Thanks for the link. These IMHO look better and also look like they will play vinyl exceptionally well, too. Good design can have superb aesthetics as well as great function.

I'm inclined to give the LOC a great deal of respect. They have over three million recordings of various types.

Re: How can this be a good idea?
The Simon Yorke is not comparable, at all.
It has a full platter.
