Hello yulibertyv, welcome to the forum.

My guess would be: Japan Piezo PU-402, aka Syntec S-220, aka Sparta ST-220.

Best regards.

Name that tonearm?

Post by jimvinyldisc » 18 Oct 2018 11:45

Hi audiophiles,

Sorry I saw that someone else had recently asked a very similar question for a different tonearm, but I have the same question of my own...

Any ideas?... how do you rate them?
What is it worth if I were to sell it?

I see a majority of 401's are equipped with SME 3009's so guess this is the way to go (with the tried and tested).

I am thinking of building a new plinth so the current one will become redundant.

Unless I can be convinced that this tonearm is worth keeping...

It sounds ok, although I have nothing to compare it against.

thanks, Jim

Hi Jim.

I think that you have a DSC Jelco SA-100 tonearm.

Wow, I had in the back of my mind it was a Jelco but obviously didn't know the model number, maybe I had looked at the end of the balance counter weight at some time then forgot about it. I bought the TT from a guy who had owned it from new. He wasn't short of a bob or two so having a rare addition doesn't surprise me too much. It's great that you have all the accoutrements with your arm, thank you for sharing the pics. A keeper it is then. After building a new heavy duty plinth I was going to install an SME to fall inline with the general consensus, but I am very happy with this arm and might just stick with it.
Any idea on the value of one of these, is there any demand for one compared to an SME 3009?
thanks for the advice and pics. Jim

Sadly, I do not own this tonearm. These pictures are borrowed from the www (as noted under the pics  ). I do always add some pics for a comparison, if possible... .

Well, that is hard to say, because the don't seem to appear very often for sale. Tonearms from Jelco enjoy a good reputation and are always popular.
In my opinion it should be worth ~ $250 in a good condition and with all accessories, the paperwork and the original box.

Regards, Flo.

P.S.: I've found something that might could be of interest:

Hello friends,
I bought the turntable REGA Planar 3 through Ebay with these typ of tonearm.I don't know what kind is it and how to setup it. What I found it seems like the Hadcock, but I didn't find exactly the same but with certain differences. Can you someone write me what type nad a brand is it and how I have to do set up. The counterweight is not symmetrical, button for tightening is from the metal and this is outbalanced all the weight.

Again, Syntec. The base's similarity to Grace bases is interesting. And yours seem not to have the auxilliary weight on them in the pictures.

Hi Nat,
Thank you very much for your reply. But I can not find the same from Syntec ... it seems like a hybrid ... something from Roksan, something from VPI, something from Hadcock ... do you know which model can it be? Yes - I wondered that a balanced counterwieght is missing ... because a horizontal balance is very difficult set up ...by headshell, it can not be determined ?
