My pro-ject debut was on special offer. But he does what he should, play records :-)

I'm wondering if the economics of turntable manufacturing suggests that there is a process, procedure, and/or technique, to get all there is to get from a turntable for X cost. I've read about record players costing between $28 and $250,000. I know the $28 player is not delivering it all; and, I am just as certain it does not take $250,000 to get all there is from the groove to get. So, what's out there today that gets the job done for the least money? Is there a winner among the hundreds of models produced today? Will $500 cover it? How about $2000? Maybe $20,000? I know of only one reviewer, Michael Fremer, who has actually in effect declared a winner by stating that his player is the best that he has heard. What about you?

I got a Technics SL-220 in perfect condition, with only a few scuffs on the dust cover for free. Cost me $42 to replace the belt and stylus

Just won a Dual 601 in an online auction for $90
When I get the TT home in a couple of days I'll know if I did a good deal or not. Looks nice on the auctioneer's site though:

Hi to all,
I build mine using different parts.
Sound excellent and total cost maybe $300.00 but worth all the process and learning curve.

BTW: How Can I post pictures directly?

Andre.

I have paid 100 EUR for my Siemens RW-555 from 1981. It was made by Micro-seiki for Siemens hifi line. I have it for little more than 2 months now and I think it will stay with me for years to come.

My bride can read my mind so I try to not think about how much I have spent on the various tables/arms/carts in residence. :)

Hi, thought I'd post about some of my turntables and roughly when I bought them:
  • Oracle Alex MkII/Sumiko Premier MMT (CAD $2300 30 yrs ago
  • Sold MMT, bought a SME 3009 (CAD $ 300, 20 yrs ago
  • Replaced the 3009 with a brand new 309, 15 yrs ago (CAD $2650)
  • Roksan Xerxes (original) 5 yrs ago, (CAD $ 150, needed a minor repair to the power supply), given to
  • various changers and other tts: Garrard SB Zero 100; Dual 1216; Garrard Lab 80; Yamaha Yp-450; Yamaha PF1000; STD805S; and on and on..

Most of the last group were $50 or less, other than the PF1000 ($300) and the STD ($100)
I have been pretty luck, and have most of these still.

Back on page 55 I got a Rega Planar P3 for free. Today I was given another freebie. A Thorens Td-125 with SME 3009. The speed was off according to the stroboscope but I can adjust it 33.33 ish using my RPM app and after cleaning all the potentiometers out. Music sounds great using my own AT95e in a wooden body. About 8 hours fiddling on this. Need to get some replacement nuts and washers to adjust the sprung top to correct level.

Absolutely filthy when I got it. Took me a while to figure out how to adjust the arm so that counterweight clears the lift.

Came with a filthy but perfect smoked acrylic cover and a Goldring 1022GX and original Shure headshell missing the finger life all rattling around in plastic box with various other bits and pieces. The cartridge needs a new stylus, apparently :-)

SME 3009 S II pre-improved apparently ! Nice one. It does take some fiddling to understand it's build, balance and potential. But once acquired it all becomes evident and adjusting and trouble shooting any eventual issue more evident. So a necessary step before endless hours of worry less listening pleasure.

What is that with the counterweight and the "lift" ? Could you elaborate some please as I do not get your point there ?

Thanks for letting me know what SME I've got. By lift, I mean the tonearm lift lever that raises and lowers the tonearm on the record. As received using it would collide when lifting the record up during play. It would collide/interfere with what the SME manual calls the "rider weight" (see below)
