Just released today, not on discogs yet and haven’t opened it, will do after work this evening and put it on discogs at the same time. Described as on mixed opaque orange vinyl, whatever that is... sounds nice. I’m a huge fan of artists trying acoustic or orchestral arrangements, some of them are done so incredibly well (Above & Beyond - Acoustic or Evanescence - Synthesis as recent examples). This should be a treat.

It looks interesting! 8)

So my mum claimed this morning that a new independent record store had opened up, 15 minutes from my house. With all due respect to my mum, I took it with a pinch of salt as she has been known to get these things wrong. Turns out, it’s true and I picked these up. 50% off the marked up price of 3 huge crates or records, lots of rare first pressings and generally very good prices. Owner was friendly and helpful, shop was amazing with loads of goodies and retro stuff. My bank account is worrying already.

Man I’m jealous! We’ve got 3 record shops within a 30 minute radius of mine, must admit, I don’t visit them often enough, but they’ve generally cottoned on to the vinyl boom and tend to keep the good records for discogs/amazon buyers. Perhaps it’s that I’m not regular enough, should make more of an effort.

Must admit, I wasn’t hopeful when I was told but I was blown away. Cannot wait to revisit.

Just a follow up to first listen of The Beach Boys - With the Philharmonic Orchestra

As I said previously, I'm a huge fan of acoustic and orchestral arrangements. I love it when they put a different flavour to the well made tunes. I must preface this by saying I'm not a huge Beach Boys connoisseur, I love their big hits, but I don't know them inside out, and to me, there's not enough of a difference to each track from the originals to really feel like it's a separate creation if you know what I mean. Don't get me wrong in any way, it still sounds fantastic, and I'm very pleased to have it in my collection.

They've taken the voices from original tapes and then philharmonicked? #-o over the top. The pressing itself is absolutely top notch, for several reasons:

Firstly, the finish... the cover is I guess a standard gatefold attempt, but good quality, nothing to moan about. BUT, and here's a big thing for me that makes it stand out... the colour is wonderful, really vivid and constant, not washed out like on some coloured records. More importantly for me though, the labels are the same way up on front and rear of the record! That's attention to detail! And, another huge plus from me is polylined paper sleeves.

Secondly the pressing... well, what can I say, dead quiet vinyl, zero pops or clicks, excellent separation, great range, they've done an outstanding job! Can't thank them enough.

I think for a serious fan, you'd probably be able to pick out the little differences here and there, and it might be a more important works for you. =D>

What will really interesting is when Chad Kassem releases his first UHQR. The last any one of us has heard it should be released in the next four weeks. He bought the rights to UHQR some time back so that's how it's being released by two different companies. I'm really looking forward to hearing it. It's the stereo and mono versions of Hendrix's Axis: Bold As Love.

Thelonious Monk - - - Monk's Dream

Jazz remains a sort of difficult one for me. The pragmatic listener part of me thinks Jazz just noodles around endlessly and never goes anywhere. But with my somewhat new view I think, so does life.
What's wrong with music that earns the acrimonious title of Muzak from me? Certainly Monk is not Muzak. But it IS what I call 'Wallpaper music' Set it and forget it. So much is this music just to do other stuff while it plays, I just can't imagine sitting and watching it live, nor sitting and listening to it closely.
But,,, as something which creates a mood to exist within, like e.g. Eno's Ambient music. Then I can see the value of it and enjoy it, quite a lot actually.
I still can't accept it as an art form, but I reckon since so many people do, it's my error. There is something I'm not getting about it.
In any case I'm very much enjoying the mood this record is setting. I'm totally in the 'Groove' daddyo!

I'm struggling with Jazz as well. Some artists/albums I like quite a bit. Others, I don't think I ever will. Then there are the artists like Miles Davis where I like some of there albums, hate others. Some of his live material with Coltrane (generally more upbeat than the material on Kind of Blue ("So What" in particular) are fantastic). Then I tried the acclaimed Sketches of Spain and hated it. Must be me alone in the world that doesn't like that record, but there you have it.

Jazz is such a catch all I don't think ANYONE is supposed to like all of it.

I've just ordered Ron Carter 'parade' and mulling another few of his albums.

Also just hit BIN on a copy of Vaughan Williams fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis. I already have a couple of versions of this, but Radio 3 said this was the best so who am I to Argue :)

Thought I had a nice yard sale find - Beatles White album with white vinyl when I did a quick check. Got home and it is sides 3 and 4 in white and the marble vinyl version of Sgt. Pepper. Not what I thought but still interesting.
