Platter Wobble on Brand New SL-1200GR

Post by beadlesabout » 06 Apr 2018 19:12

Hi all,

Especially those with this model, is this an acceptable amount of platter wobble?

Any clever tricks to establish if it’s the platter or the bearing/spindle?

Cheers!

That’s not normal. My GR has no discernible wobble at the platter edge.

Is the platter actually raising and falling or is it just the strobe markings? Strobe markings are often not equal as long as the top of the platter is you are fine.

Now if the platter is really raising and falling it is also possible there is a bit of crud between where the platter sits, it was a common problem with the old sl1200, people would have exactly your symptom and removing the platter and cleaning where the parts mate and reinstalling it should fix the problem. Sorry dont know how your platter is removed as it is a bit different to the old sl1200.
Fingers crossed.

The GR platter just pulls off like the old Mk2/Mk5.

It might be worth taking the platter off, and turning it by 90 degrees in relation to the spindle and replacing it, then seeing if the wobble is the same. Repeat until the platter is where it started in relation to the spindle. If there is a difference in the amount of wobble, and the spindle and platter hole are both clean as Chris says above, then the problem might lie with the spindle.

The turntable should still be under warranty, so it should really go back to the supplying retailer.

If it is the same as the old sl1200mk2, then there is a very strong chance there is a bit of crud on one side of the spindle or the hole causing the platter to sit slightly off, check carefully for even a tiny bit of something as that is all it takes..

Yeah no that's not normal , especially since it looks like it's making the rubber mat bounce around on the edge too . Strange with the newer ones being supposedly more hand assembled than the old SL-1200 you would think something like this would be less likely to happen .

I'd agree to try and clean it out , if it doesn't Help take it back while you still have the warranty .

No, this is not normal at all.

Mine is perfectly flat, no issues at all.

Good luck.

Im not convinced - the very top edge of the platter looks to be barely moving. Its a VERY close up shot too so thats not much movement of the top edge. Other owners should post the same video of theirs - same angle/zoom and see if they are different. :)

I personally dont see the rubber as bouncing, its just not sitting flat against the platter in every spot - so while turning, looking at one spot - appears to bounce.

It looks to me that the strobe reflectors (official name?) just arent perfect aligned with the platter.

For kicks I went and looked at my 1210m5g. wow that's a thick mat on your turntable - lol. I cant even get a video this clear with my phone that close up so well done on the shot! lol And all this said - my strobe edge reflectors seem to be a lot more straight on the platter than this - but I still am not convinced that your whole platter is wobbling as much as the side details on it.
Again - the rubber isnt bouncing - its juts slightly lifted in some spots not making contact. I am curious about that - because mine seems flat on all around - but your mat is MUCH thicker - so maybe a consequence of the thicker rubber being more rigid in places?

all very interesting as I never looked so closely at the side of my platter. lolol

Looks to me like he is using the thicker 6mm rubber mat . Not sure if any of the new SL-1200 come with those or if he is using the thicker mat of the old SL-1200s .

My MK2 had wobble, when I brought it to KAB for a total inspection and installation of the dampener he fixed it by taking a spindle shaft he had for this purpose and hitting it with a hammer into my platter. The platter hole had some burrs from taking it on and off. I hate taking the platters off these things. As for the new GR, I would try taking it off and putting it on in a different rotation. If it doesn't work warranty it.

Given the price of the new ones and the fact that they supposedly make very few of them per day this really shouldn't be happening anymore .

I have mine since yesterday and I have the exact same problem. Not so bad, but you can still clearly see the platter going up and down (at least 1mm).
I've contacted my dealer and he will replace it as soon as possible.

Well I'm not sure how big of a deal 1mm is . The platter on my old SL-1200 has a slight wobble like that too . But I would have thought that with the new ones so few being made per day that they like check them all before they go out .
