A few comments on the Audio Technica AT-Mono3/LP. This is a high output moving coil (1.2 mV at 1 kHz, 5.0 cm/sec) that extracts a monophonic signal over left and right output channels (i.e., the stylus assembly is calibrated for horizontal compliance). At the same time, it does have some minimal vertical stylus motion too. Stylus is a bonded .6 mil diamond, and tracks nominally at 2 grams.

I mounted it on an AT headshell. Curiously its two sets of hardware screws were too small, or too large to use with their headshell. I set overhang/offset using the Cart-a-Lign device I've had since the '80s. It works under the geometrical insight that all properly overhung arms interect at one spot with respect to the horizontal pivot. Once you locate that spot, you then set offset using the standard 2 point "A" alignment, which on the Technics arm requires a bit of twisting (cartridge must be slightly angled in)

If your system is prone to hum, the output may be too low. In that case, you can try the AT VM610MONO which has an output of 3.0mv. I have a JFET to dual 12AY7 triode phono stage driving a quad 12AX7 line stage, driving 2 push pull EL34 40 watt mono amps, and there was no problem with hum, although I did have to crank the volume up to noon with my moderately high efficiency modified JBL L100 speakers (LE25 HF driver replaced with 035Ti driver).

Sound was very balanced with good bass and highs. Not aggressive, or laid back, either. I listened with one speaker, and then using two spaced for normal stereo. For real mono sound you should use one speaker, but with two the image was stable. Just to check, I played a minute or two of a stereo album, and the cartridge did present a mono signal, but the sound was really muffled and not pleasant at all.

The only downside is that this is a Japanese import (grey market), and is therefore not supported by AT USA. It is sold in Europe, though. So if it breaks, you are out of luck. I've owned a lot of carts, and the only ones that ever broke on me were an Ortofon OM 20 (post on the back came loose and Ortofon sent me a new body); a Highphonic MC with a collapsed cantelever (importer went out of business); and a Stanton 881S--the fins that held the cartridge screws came loose from the body. By that time Stanton was out of the hi-fi business.

PS: The price of this goodness is $120.00. Showing that you don't need to spend a fortune for great sound.

FWIW: I just ordered another AT MONO 3. I have an idea that they are not going to keep this low price point for long. Euro price is $177.00. I've seen a couple of other on-line places importing them to US and reselling for $190.00. $120.00 is below Japanese list, which is 15K yen, or $134.00.

If my sample is typical, this represents a great bargain, should you need a monophonic cartridge.

PS: I never advise skipping the established retail channel if you can get the same product from an authorized retailer. But in this case, AT does not import the item, so there is no ethical problem. You just can't claim support should you need it. Not sure why AT is not bringing them to the US.

Hi, friends at Vinylengine. My first post here. I did this combination of Technics Ltd. Gold Headshell and Technics EPC-U205CMK3 and I enjoy it a lot on my GAE. Cheers!

Andy. Chris here. Until recently I had a Nagaoka MP30 I bought used on my MK5. Loved it so much I bought a new MP110 for my Pro-ject Debut Carbon. Nagaoka is now my go to MM cartridge. Can't go wrong for the money in my opinion.

Hi Chris. I am super impressed so far with the Nagaoka. I should have went this route a long time ago.

I bought my Technics SL1210M5G turntable used on Ebay about five years ago. It came with an Ortofon nightclub yellow S cartridge. I have never changed it and it performs well. Since I am a novice, I don't know if changing this cartridge would be a worthwhile move. I am also new to this site and must say there is a treasure trove of knowledge here. I'm very glad to be a member.

Today I have just received my stylus ATN150SA. I had to install it on my AT440 body. Now I spinning it just 3 hours. So it is so soon to speak about perfectionism of sound but bass slightly coming up :) I enjoy it and I hope it will be even better after 20 hours...

I became an SL-1200 MKII owner last year. I started with an Audio-Technica A440MLB, but upgraded to a Hana SL last month. It's a noticeable upgrade and I'm loving it so far. I upgraded to an Ortofon SH-4 headshell because the stock Technics was too light for it. The Hana is very light at 5G. I could have added a counterweight to it, but the Ortofon headshell seems to be better quality.

Shure m44G at the moment. I have a pair of Shure SC35C carts, in headshells, for when the mood hits.

I have AT440mlb on original stock technics headshell and there is absolutely no bright is possible the Hana is too light and need heavier headshell... Is it big improvement?

It’s definitely a noticeable improvement. You’re right about the cartridge being too light for the stock headshell. You can add a counterweight to it though, or buy a heavier headshell. I ended up getting an Ortofon SH-4 headshell.
