Which turntable for an sme309

Post by Inigo71 » 18 Oct 2017 09:55

I recently was lucky to find an sme 309 arm for 500€ with box, it is like new. I really like how it looks and now want to add it to one of my turntables.
Here are my options.
Thorens TD 124 with some 3009
LP 12 With Ittok LVII
Thorens 125 with Jelco 750
Technics SL 120

Any suggestions on which turntable can I fit it best??
Thanks in advance

The lp12 will be the easiest I think as it has a separate arm board iirc. The others, not sure, but the 309 requires a great big long hole, cutting that into a plinth may be difficult.

Why don't take a look outside your 'box'? I can highly recommend you to go for a Michell Gyro SE as the synergy between the Michell decks and the SME tonearms is something really special.

Hi

I'm not lucky enough to own an SME, but I think the TD124's existing arm-mounting for the 3009 ought to be suitable for the 309 as well.

As for the Linn, the only snag is that the 309 is quite heavy, so the suspension would need some adjustment (as well as a new armboard, of course). Even then, it probably wouldn't be an ideal combination IMHO.

The TD125 can also be fitted with a new armboard relatively easily, as these are a simple, rectangular shape.

I own Thorens TD125 and it has a separate mounting board on which my 3009 Ser II is mounted.

Thaks everyone for your input. I´ll try first the thorens td 124, regarding the Michell gyro I think it is out of my budget.
I will post my first impresions

The Mitchell is a really nice turntable, I would like on on the shelf to join the others eventually. It would go well with the 309. The td 124 is nice too though.

Congrats. If I had seen that I would have snapped it up to give myself a second 309. It is a superb arm. I would personally put it on the SL-120 and amaze yourself how good that is as you have good arms on your other tables.

If one comes up my Konkrete kenwood will have one, although I am angling for a 3009 series 3 as well for high compliance carts.
