New LP Gear Carbon Fiber AT95se

Post by Boltman92124 » 15 Mar 2017 20:53

This is a new offering at LP Gear. Looks like the SE version of the AT95 but with a new Carbon Fiber cantilever. At this price I figured I'd order one today just to check it out.

Following. I was interested in their AT92 P mount of the same lineage. Wondering if it would be an upgrade over my AT311EP. Was thinking of getting the stylus for it.

Despite their flowery language, I seriously doubt that it would be an upgrade. This is the same carbon-plastic composite (NOT pure carbon fiber) cantilever that AT uses on their most basic entry-level cartridges such as the AT3400, AT3600, and 3482P. Think about it; there's a reason why AT only uses it on their least-expensive cartridges. It's designed to be inexpensive and to take abuse. But people see the words "carbon fiber" and they get excited... and LPGear has decided to cash in on that excitement. Can't blame them! I saw these new LPGear styli a few weeks ago and immediately rolled my eyes. Pretty soon they'll be offering VividLine and Shibata versions. It's utterly silly unless you actually have a need for a cantilever that can handle more abuse than aluminum alloy. Might be good if you've got lots of kids around, I suppose.

As far as sound quality goes, I don't think they sound better than aluminum alloy. I think they sound worse. I've compared them side by side. This is all about marketing — something that LPGear is very good at.

Well in either case, the LP Gear stylus is an upgrade from the AT stylus. It's the SE stylus on the carbon cantilever. And AT doesn't even offer an elliptical for the 3600 series. The price of the SE stylus is the same, whether alluminum or Carbon.

When I said it wasn't an upgrade, I was referring to the previous poster who said he was considering it as an upgrade for his 311EP (and I was also referencing your original post which described the carbon offering for the AT95). In those scenarios I would consider it a downgrade rather than an upgrade.

That's what I pretty much figured.

Anyone try the DEFT, DEFT2 or the (gasp) Vessel offerings from LP? I am very happy with my cheapie CF3600LE so far. Thinking of getting a better cart...or two

I have the CF3600LE also and I think it sounds better than the stock 95e. And I bonked the needle on the 95 anyway so I thought I'd try the CF SE stylus on it rather than adding to my cartridge collection with a Deft 2 or Vessel. I just want a good beater MM cart.

The DEFT series has better numbers than the Vessel (stylus excluded)

Just a Sumiko Oyster though right(Deft). Stylus makes all the difference. The Vessel has some very nice reviews so far.

DEFT 2:
I have one. It is good all around including smooth treble. Definitely worth its price around $100.00.

Have not heard the carbon AT. Seems interesting at an entry level!

Just remember that it's not pure carbon fiber. It's a composite of carbon and plastic. AT uses it on their least-expensive cartridges because it's durable and less likely to be bent or broken accidentally by rough handling or an inexperienced user. If it sounded better than an aluminum tube, AT would be using it on more than just their entry-level cartridges. :) The issue here is that the words "carbon" and "carbon fiber" sound sophisticated, advanced, high-tech... and let's face it, audiophiles and hifi enthusiasts are drawn to things like that. LPGear is taking advantage of that and profiting from it. Capitalism at its best (or at its worst, depending on your viewpoint).

BMRR: Actually AT also made the Signet TKN7, TKN8 and TKN9 (nude sharp spherical, nude sharp elliptical & nude Shibata, each with carbon cantilever) for the older Signet TKs - so it's not like AT would have only ever used carbon cantilevers for entry-level needles.

Greetings from Munich!
