How did you end up with an Elac?

Post by vinyl master » 23 Feb 2017 02:09

Well, my friends...Since there is an entire thread devoted to those wonderful Duals, I thought I'd start a thread for those equally-as-devoted Elac lovers! The Miracords don't get the same press as the Duals, but they can be very well-made machines in their own right...They are fine tables that with a little fettling can serve one for years! So, to start, here is a pic of my recently acquired 40a...

35985

It came with a Realistic R27E cartridge (similar to the Shure M75ED)...

35982

In order to play 78's and 45's separately, I bought an extra headshell...This guy apparently bought a cache of them from an estate sale...Here is a pic of the TAS1 headshells he was selling for $59.99 a piece...

36163

Finding one of these can be rare, but I got a nice specimen from him for even cheaper out of the box...

36167

So for $25 locally (for the turntable) and the cost of a headshell and a new stylus or two from Gary, she sings again! :D And I couldn't pass her up for the price, considering what some of these models are going for!

I've also been seeing some very nice 46 and 50H models lately on various local Craigslists...

So, guys...If there are any Elac owners among you, why not share your stories here of how you obtained your Elac? 8) =D>

Hi Vinyl master,

Doesn't that machine have one of those nice outer rotor hysteresis synchronous motors as in my R-O-K? I think they are things of beauty.

Bought mine new in 1972. This workhorse has serviced me well over the years with a little maintenance, love, and care!

And what a beautiful example it is, too, hockeyrock...Looks like a different plinth than what I see some of these with, as well...You've got to admit that these Elacs have such a clean look to them! 8)

Workhorses, indeed!! :D

I also have another one like it I bought used online also in excellent shape. I have it set up in another area of the house. One I run through a set of Bose tower speakers. The other through a pair of vintage Ohm C2 speakers I bought new in the late 70's, still going strong!

Yeah, mine is in a Realistic-type plinth for now (I may change this later, but I'm not sure...)...Walnut grain finish, too...These apparently were sold at Radio Shack back in the day...Check this out! There's a picture of it here on Page 11...

Apparently, the Miracord 45 was also very popular around this time...I'm still looking for a dust cover, though, as pictured on Page 26 of the catalog...Do you still have yours? :-k
