Dual 1219/ 1229/ 1229Q Appreciation Thread

Post by Tinkaroo » 01 Dec 2016 18:13

This is my Dual 1229Q idler drive as pictured. I really like the build quality, features and performance on this model.

Does anybody else have one or a similar model and what do you like about it?

Let's try to keep this thread positive since their seems to be too much negativity these days. Let's accentuate the positive! =D>

Show us a picture of yours if you'd like since we would love to see it.

Right now I have two 1219's, both non-/partly functional. I'll be happy to contribute if and when one of them is up and running. I managed to get one motor up to snuff, the other one is toast.

I really like the massive platter, it kind of looks like a 1950's UFO or spaceship.

I also have the flip-style dust cover, and the plinth with the front panel that flips down. Both need some TLC but otherwise seem to be in good order.

I am the proud owner of a 1229 that I got from jdjohn earlier this year and a 1219 recently fully and impecably restored by our very own dualcan!

I have owned the 1219 for many years. It came from Ebay and required a parts table to get it running. It worked great until last Summer and I got in over my head trying to fix it.

Now it runs like new, is dead silent and looks great.

I will send my 1228 out to Klaus next year for spa treatment. That table with a M91 or 93 ed cart will be a gift for my daughter for graduation from MTSU. I will get a new dust cover made for it though.

I really like that platter mat some of the 1219s had with the big strobe markings on the outer beauty ring/metal insert. It looks similar to he one shown on the 1019 that Maggie93 depicted.

I have seen some very nice plinths that some people have made for their Duals. Some of the early plinths on some of the Noresco plinths were very good quality with real veneer.

The plinth that Japi mentioned with the flip open front storage panel was also quite classy as was the flip open front dust cover. The dust cover is hard to find in good condition these days.

I actually like it, but it is like any modern art in that some love it and some hate it.

It is more of a statement than anything else.

I want to cry... My 1229 was LENT to a friend's son nearly thirty years ago and it stayed with his ex when he divorced and emigrated to the US in the mid 90's, leaving his old life behind :(

There's a chance of a fair price mint 1019 though. I should flog a Garrard or two to justify it first...

Absobloodylutely wonderful these decks are. The pleasure in watching and hearing them work (the 701 is silent as the grave when the auto functions are working), the wonderful musical sounds that emanate from a 'mere auto-changer' too and the lovely 'feel' of the controls. The only thing to balance the increasing used prices on these is the fact that a 1229/1249 would probably cost the thick end of a couple of grand if made today.

I left you with some work to do on that 1229, Bob, although it was playable. I hope you can finish the restoration on it someday!

Love my 1219. Bought it new 46 years ago. I service it regularly and it repays me faithfully with its uncompromising quality of sound reproduction. I have a direct drive linier tracking turntable by Technics that sounds excellent, however I find that I return to the 1219 when I do really serious listening. I just like the sound from the 1219 better.

I looked over your checklist over the weekend and I got it all done! It is playing Neil Young's Harvest right now!
