Shure M97xE Left Channel Is Out

Post by PioneerFan » 29 Sep 2019 18:42

Hi,

I have tried everything- new headshell, new wires, the new stylus that I bought to have handy. I have tried the cartridge on two different systems, two different turntables. The left channel of my Shure M97xE is out. And nothing will seem to bring it back. My questions are, I know this was a common known issue. Everything points to the innards of the cartridge itself. Is there a fix? If not, aside from this cartridge, did Shure make other carts that the N97XE stylus will work on?

Thank you!

You can use this chart to find alternate choices of carts for your stylus.

You haven't tried everything. Reverse the turntable connections to your receiver (or amp, whichever it may be). If the left channel is still out, the problem is somewhere in the receiver. If the RIGHT channel is now out, the problem is in the turntable, most likely in the connecting cables.

He said he tried the cartridge on two different systems, so I think the cart is the issue.
It can be an unsoldered wire at one of the output pins. Some people have resoldered the wire with infinite precaution and success. I'll look for the thread, if nobody does it before me.

Still easier to try my suggestion.

On my Shure M97xE, it was the right channel.

My fix was to get an Ortofon 2M Red. It works, and sounds better anyway.

This indeed is a known issue with this cart. I am not going to try what Alec did. I simply bought a used cartridge for $30. The point here is, I have other cartridges, I am not looking to "replace" this with another brand or model. I have two N97XE styli, and want to keep using the original, with a brand new one as my spare. This seemed like a great option.

Interesting chart, but it doesn't spec if someone was to have Stylus 'X", what cartridges could take it. They are referencing older carts, with "modern" equivalents that were available before Shure exited the business.

Look at the cartridge model, like M94E, then look at Suggested Current Cartridge Replacement. Suggested Current Cartridge Replacement is M97xe, then the M97xe stylus will still fit the older model. M97xe was the last of the line for Shure carts. You can only marry a compatible stylus to an older body.

A better cart that can use those styli is the M97HE Era IV cart, or the much less expensive Realistic version (exactly the same!) is the RXT4.

I got 3 RXT4 carts, paid $35 each.

Other than the repair suggested by Alec in the other thread, I'm afraid I don't have any words of wisdom for the OP. I have 2 - M97xE's that I acquired several years ago. These issues of a dead channel were around then also. So what I have decided to do is to pull the tag wires off at the headshell when moving these cartridges around. The wires that are on them now will stay on them forever. Better that than the risk of turning it into a paperweight.

My M97xEs are 2001 vintage. I’ve swapped one many times between headshells and turntables. No issues. I still have a sealed, NIB 2001 unit and a never used, NIB extra stylus.

I know a guy who has done this repair for several people. I think he charges around $50 to do the repair. Happy to give you his contact info if you're interested.

It will fit on almost all of Shure's P-mount cartridges, and Shure made a LOT of those, so that gives you some options — you'd just need a P-mount adapter in order to use one of those carts on a standard mount tonearm.

Alternatively, your N97xE styli will fetch very good prices on eBay these days and you could put that money toward some other cart or stylus.
