DP-1200 Denon

Post by dave2103 » 05 Jan 2020 04:22

Connected a Vincent PHO 8 for improved sound. Started turntable, no sound. Checked connections all fine, checked receiver for correct output. (RZ-810 Onkyo) All fine. Connected turntable back up as original, no sound. Was working just fine last used, maybe 3 days ago. Checked audio cables again, fine. Vincent unit powers on. Turntable turns on, speed is adjustable, standby operates. I'M STUCK NEED SOME ADVICE
Searched thru manuals no help. Read thru forums until eyes started to blur. Question, can a
cartridge just go out ? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Highly unlikely cartridge would choose to fail at the exact same moment you are futzing with your system. IME connecting and reconnecting and experiencing sound loss is not that uncommon. In fact just recently had the same thing happen with a tape deck. I disconnected it to do some minor PM and when I hooked it back had zero sound. I know from experience it is always something really basic. Cable issue in this case, on installing a replacement sound returned. Common for the RCA collar to no longer be making good contact after the connection has been undone. Are they going on snug or feel loose? May need a good cleaning.

Does your receiver have a phono selection or are you running the PHO 8 into an aux?

Cables are very snug. Receiver has phono in. When connecting PHO 8 connected to cd in. Did not connect to phono in. When connecting turntable without PHO connected to phono in. Can you cause damage if you are not set to correct cart. Meaning if it was set at mm and should have been mc or other way, mc instead of mm. Do not know what the cart is on the DP 1200 and could not find anything in the specs showing what it is. Thank you for your response.

Cannot find any fault in any of that. Switching from phono to CD is appropriate with the PHO 8 in use.

To proceed any further on this issue some measurements are necessary. Do you have a digital volt meter (if not get one, few bucks at hw store and invaluable for sleuthing this sort of thing) to check for continuity between the cartridge pins and the RCA plugs? Should read less then an ohm. If not indicating a break has occurred somewhere. Possibly where the cable enters the table from pulling on it.

To assess the cartridge measure resistance across the pins for each channel. This will tell you if the cartridge has been shorted, ie display will just flash. Having the PHO 8 on the wrong setting will not do anything if its MM, outside possibility if it is MC. When I bought a DP-1200 new it came with a MC type on it. But yours can certainly be different. Can you see any markings or post a pic to help identify?

Installed different set of cables, no fix. Inspected cartridge and found lead wire from cart to needle broken. What is a good cart for the DP-1200 ?

In the owners manual under cartridge installation it is showing a Denon DL-103, still currently produced.
