Sony PS-X7 tonearm issue-help

Post by digmore » 19 Aug 2017 23:58

I am working on the Sony PS-X7 and the tonearm drops like a rock.
So I researched and found the posts on how to fix it. Pulled the
tonearm out yesterday and put some 60k silicone in the arm lifter
push rod assembly, Felt right, smooth with some friction. Put it back
together and it is doing the same thing. All the auto tonearm functions
work as they should, but the cueing lever does not actuate the arm lift
at all. From the feel of the cueing lever , does not feel attached to the
arm lifter, swings freely up/down.
The diagrahm in the SM indicates a "lift stopper" inside. Was
thinking that might have gone bad. Not really sure and wanted to get
some help before I pull that tonearm back out. Also cant see anything
missing or out of alignment. Thanks in advance.

I pulled the tonearm back out. The cueing lever and arm lifter function normally
when not installed. I put some more silicone goop in the arm lifter and worked it real good. Maybe did not have enough silicone in the arm lifter.
Looked at the working mechanism, main lever, cog wheel, etc..cant see any issues.
Going to reinstall the tonearm tonight and see what happens...fingers crossed. #-o

update and closure maybe:

After working some more silicone goop into the arm lifter,
the tonearm works much better, slower descent..
Could be better, but its probably working the way its supposed to.
The cueing lever only functions when actually playing a record..*headache*
There was also some grease on the tonearm brake wheel, cleaned it up.
For some strange reason I had to do a major adjust on the lead in drop down point. I think its good now.

I've been restoring a couple of these TTs for the last few months (PS-X5, PS-X6). When working properly they are very good performers. The weight of the goop you are using may be too light. My research advises 300,000 or 500,000 CST silicone. It is commonly used in shock/suspension systems of RC cars and is stocked at most Hobby Stores. Be careful disassembling the cueing mechanism so as not to break the small plastic cueing stop that sits behind the two-hole round screw.

Digmore and I got the table running. I ordered some super goopey goop, like 500K centistokes or so, and it's much happier. So is the customer.

Hi , I just got an X7 and it needs some work to function properly in auto mode. Either I try to do it myself or I take it to a repair facility. Can anyone recommend a place in Toronto Ontario?
I'm handy but never opened up a TT before. I'd like to try bu I don't want to make things worse.
Thanks all.
Great site. Great forum

This one is complicated. If you're not comfortable working on it, definitely take it somewhere.

But, what is it doing?

Power on in auto mode, 30cm, strobe comes on, touch start /stop and platter spins, strobe does out, tone arm moves over and drops. Sometimes strobe comeso back on, but speed too slow and will not lock in. Record plays for a few seconds and tonearm lifts returns to home position and shuts off. Strobe is on.
In manual mode, I touch start, platter spins, sometimeso strobe is on sometimes not, speed does not lock in. once tonearm is placed on record
It plays for a bit than returns an shuts off. Sometimes speed locks in and she plays fine. Where do I start?

I'm just getting into my PS-X7 so I'm following along the same sort of path you are, so I'll just through some stuff I've been reviewing out there:

- check / adjust the x-tal lock sensing head gap
- magnetic stripe on the platter intact?
- check that you have proper voltages at key points. Note there is an error in the service manual for the PS-X4 regarding the test point location for the B+ (14V) adjustment (1st voltage to check). I have not checked to see if this error is also in the PS-X7 service manual. Apparently with the X4 you must use the -ve side of C104 and one of the the test point pins, not the two test point pins identified.
- also a failing capacitor C106 in the strobe circuit may be causing the strobe to turn on and off. My strobe is completely dark and the capacitor is leaking.
- capacitance switches probably need to be disassembled and cleaned.
- have you checked for cracks in the plastic brake drum collar or the automatic selector?
