Sony PS-F9 Tonearm won't stay down

Post by biomayhem » 22 Nov 2018 07:27

Hi all. Just got home for Thanksgiving and was digging around my old room going through some of my old stuff while the kids were hanging out with the grand parents. I was looking for some old picture when low and behold I found my old Sony PS-F9 turntable buried within a pile of stuff. I had this since the early 80s when my dad picked it up on a business trip to Japan, if I remembered correctly.

Anyway, put in some batteries and tried to play a record with it, not quite sure if it will work. Well, the clamping mechanism worked and the record started spinning when I hit play, the tonearm would drop but then it would pop right up. Tried it a couple of times but the tonearm just would not stay down. I can move the tonearm up and down with no problem but when I tried to drop the tonearm on the record, by either pressing the start/stop button or the tonearm up/down button, the tonearm would go down for a second then pop up right away. I downloaded the service manual and took a quick look. But since it's almost Thanksgiving I didn't want to spend too much time on this instead of with the family. Just curious if anyone else had this problem with their PS-F9 and how to correct it. Thanks.

Hi,

sorry can't help with the repair, but to let you know: This is a HIGHLY collectible Item, which gets absolutely insane amounts of Money on eBay (better ones go for >$400). So don't put it in the trash!

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. I would like to get it working though since it does look cool when playing a record upright.

I have a PS-F5 with the same fault, have you found a solution. I changed the belt that moves the tonearm across the record and it fixed half of my faults. Sometimes the tonearm will stay down and the record deck works perfectly but this fault is intermittent. Thank you in advance for your reply :D

Fixed the problem. Firstly put Tone arm up to 7 inch position so out of the way. Then you need to spray Contact Cleaner down the right side of player where the tone arm mechanism (white plastic cogs). Leave it to evaporate and it's fixed.

I did this a month ago and no problem since. :)
