do i need a seperate phono amp?

Post by nickshaper » 26 Sep 2018 14:30

Hi,
I have a Sony La Scala 2 system (with a rega planar 3 turntable) with the TA-S2 amp.
speakers are Jamo 307
sound good but would i benefit from a separate phono amp such as the rega fono mm mk3?

You didn't said what cartridge you use on your Rega, but I should say no, if your system sounds good. Anyway, the best way to know is to make a try.

Thanks, I wasn't sure as back in the 90's the inbuilt phono stages in amps were usually quite good!
The cartridge I'm using is the rega eleys 2

Some people says that cartridges have the reputation to be the weak point of Rega. I don't know because I've never listen to one.
But if you want to upgrade your system, why not try another cartridge, the difference may be more audible than switching for a separate phono preamp.
