Truly, officerpup...I'm enjoying these immensely...How often do you see blues and jazz 78's from a Craigslist ad? Anytime, I see 78's, they've been either pop or classical...I might even buy some of his 16-inch transcriptions...The Lowell Fulsom looks to be in very good shape, indeed, as is the Bessie Smith...Now, because of that one, my oldest one is from 1923!

Anyway, maybe you guys could help with this conundrum...I still don't know much about those glass records...I'm not really sure what they are, but the portfolio says "Album Of Recordings" from Howard Radio Co. America's Oldest Radio Manufacturers...I have three glass records, but I'll have to see if there are any more...Under "Titles", it says...

GLASS

1. BROTHER BILL Radio
2. NUDIST COLONY Geo, Greg, Bill
3. BOOGIE BUGLE BOY Major Bowes
4. WHITE CHRISTMAS Hit Parade
5. GENE KRUPA DRUMMING Charlie McKarthy (misspelled?)
6. EVERY BODY EVERY PAYDAY Tommy Tucker Band Wagon
7. THIS IS THE ARMY, MR. JONES Tommy Tucker Band Wagon
8. TEA FOR TWO Tommy Tucker Band Wagon
9. DANCE OF THE CLOWNS FM Spotlight Bands
10. JINGLE BELLS FM Spotlight Bands
11. TAVERN IN THE TOWN WWJ Spotlight Band
12. I GOT A TOUCH OF TEXAS Geo. Olsohn

I have sides 1,2,3,4,11, and 12...I'm missing three records out of the set of six, but maybe he still has them...Any idea what this is or might be? I know Major Bowes had the "Original Amateur Hour" and Tommy Tucker was a band leader...I've heard about radio transcriptions, where pre-recorded music was sent to radio stations via records...Maybe this is possibly a set of these transcriptions? If anyone can offer any insight, I'm all ears...

In any case, I'm sure there will be more records from the basement headed my way soon...

Found a really cool African record this weekend, pretty rare too! Researching this Loningisa label, I found out that these records were recorded in Léopoldville (now Kinshasa), Belgian Congo (now Democratic Republic of the Congo), and were pressed in my hometown of Gent, Belgium.

2 nice jazzy rumba tunes with some good saxophone!

I normally don't mention record finds, but was a little surprised to find a Sun 78 at a nearby Salvation Army thrift store for 50 cents, #241 Johnny Cash - I walk the line, and Get rhythm. Shows some wear and tear, but presentable, and still sounds very good with only a reasonable amount of surface noise. Pretty sure it's my first Sun 78.

OK, then, I noted on the "Budget Record Collecting" thread that I bought quite a bit of jazz on 45 rpm records recently from a local thrift store...Soooo, I decided to go back there and see if I missed anything, and I brought home 6 more 78's at 50 cents a pop! =D>

Check these out...

1. LESTER YOUNG Lester Leaps In, Pts. 2 & 3 (From "Jazz At The Philharmonic, Vol. 4") (Disc New York) (feat. Illinois Jacquet, Jack McVea, J.J. Johnson, Les Paul, etc.)
2. JAY MCSHANN AT THE PIANO Confessin' The Blues b/w Hootie Blues (Decca)
3. DUKE ELLINGTON & HIS FAMOUS ORCHESTRA The Wonder Of You b/w I'm Just A Lucky So-And-So (RCA Victor)
4. LOUIS ARMSTRONG & HIS ORCHESTRA Jodie Man b/w I Wonder (Decca)
5. COUNT BASIE AT THE PIANO Hey Lawdy Mama b/w The Fives (Decca)
6. EARL HINES & HIS ORCHESTRA ("Fatha"???) Boogie Woogie On St. Louis Blues b/w Number 19 (Bluebird)

So, did I find anything good there??? :-k
