Favourite 12" Single ?

Post by the_fox » 14 Feb 2014 16:17

I washed (and vaccumed) my small colection of 1980's 12" singles today and realised just how great they sound. I love the extended mix of Michael Jackson's 'Bad' (although the melody still sounds like verses of 'Ghostbusters' to me). 'Axel F' (the theme from Beverley Hills Cop) sounded pretty damn good too, if you like that kind of thing.

I have a fondness for these. I just wondered what you guys think makes a particularly good 12"? and what your favourites/recommendations are ?

Run DMC / Aerosmith - Walk This Way

Most of Madonna's 12" - they do sound nice when turned up

Drumfish's Papa '90 has a B side of the original Pigbag / Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag on the B side - which I love and have not got anywhere else

Quite a few obscure "Whirly" tracks from dance/trance/house acts in the 90s/00s - I have to reclean most and start again before listening

I also got almost every Thompson Twins 12" in one charity shop near a friend who lived in a small town in the middle of nowhere :)

Fourplay Jazz - Between The Sheets
Fourplay Jazz - Sexual Healing

I also have some of the usual Madonna and Janet Jackson.

Blue Monday. Coolest cover, killer track and biggest selling 12" single in units.
Deeper Shade of Soul - Urban Dance Squad. Just a perfect recording, ticks every audiophile superlative box.
All Soul2Soul 12", slick & seductive.
Double Trouble & the Rebel MC - Just Keep Rockin' - cool, just cool.

Agree with the other guys re: Madonna, very slick production. The bass on Express Yourself remixes is to die for, same applies to Like a Prayer.

I have a fondness for the 80's singles, as well. Certain songs you just want to hear in longer mixes, because they are too funky and too short for the 45' edits! One I dig is this...

Another is this obviously Parliament-influenced jam...

There are plenty more that rock my world...

Of course, I have some very interesting Bruce Springsteen 12" tunes, which is strange, because I didn't think they danced to "The Boss" in the clubs, and I hear he disavows these 12" records, from around the "Born In The U.S.A." period...There's a 12" version of "Cover Me" and "Dancing In The Dark", for instance, that Columbia released. You simply have to hear those! I have a pink Dolly Parton 12" for "Baby I'm Burnin'" that makes me shake my head...It's the artists you DON'T expect on a 12" record that make life interesting!

One that blew me away first time I heard it - Nu Shooz, "I Can't Wait". Massive clean bass that'll flatter smaller speakers and cause earthquakes with big ones :-)

The Stones - Miss You / Far Away Eyes is still a fave.

And a strange combo - disco on one side, country on the other.

Yeah, that special disco version of "Miss You" is nice! Disco and the Stones are not that far removed. Go look up Jebediah's "Rock N' Soul" album, and if you're into Pink Floyd, check out a band called Rosebud from the late 70's...Weird stuff!

Uncanny Alliance; I GOT MY EDUCATION. 1992 "house" record with a message, oustanding lyrics. Check it on youtube. Undergound club hit in NY, reached #39 on UK singles chart.

I don't own any, sadly. I would love to get any by Frankie goes to Hollywood.

The record store near me has Love will tear us apart as a 12' single. I'm tempted to buy it.

They also have Portishead's The Rip, but I have the album it's on already, so it's probably pointless.

My 12" 45rpm records is another obsession of mine. I started collecting 70s singles that had the extended mixes. (Only the ones with one cut on them, I despise remixes and multiple cuts on singles anymore) They are cheap, clean, usually mint, they are looong, and sound fantastic. Its just as fun to stack these singles as it is to stack the 7" ones. Nothing like a good 9 minute version of "Extacy" by Barry White. My favorite is my red vinyl copy of "strawberry letter 23". I will soon be moving onto finding the 12" singles to my favorite new wave 80s songs that have 7" of.

It's one of my favorites, but I only have two and the other is one of my favorites. Gregory Isaacs, known as the Cool Ruler, Reggae crooner extraordinaire.
This 12" by the above group out of Manchester England around the early 90's has the songs, It's not what you know, and, Head On. Released on Play it again Sam records. A indie rock band with bongo's can't be all too bad.
