How should I organize my 45s?

Post by Cabbage Patch Elvis » 20 Aug 2012 00:42

My wife and kid are out of town for a few days, giving me a rare opportunity to get my records organized! I can make a racket, and more importantly, spread out my stacks to make sense of them! I'm comfortable organizing the lps by genres/alphabetizing, but that doesn't seem right for the singles. I have a huge glut of 80's stuff that I've had since I was young, then another bunch of mainly 90's -2000's, then a bunch of random oldies, etc... I'm not sure I'll ever get these organized to my satisfaction, but maybe someone out there has some good ideas? Thanks in advance!

I have a few thousand singles and the easiest way I have found is to allocate each one with a number and keep a numerical list in Microsoft Excel. Depending on the way you set up the spreadsheet, you can search by genre, artist, period as the mood takes you.

I have my 45s organized by year, and within the year, alphabetically by performer. (judgement calls allowed on songs spanning the leap to a new year.)

I keep mine in boxes of about 50, each one is labelled by genre/era and I clump the same artist together if I have multiples. Then again I only have about 300 singles!
