The Who - The last time / Under my thumb Track 604006 1967

managed to snap up a VG+ copy of this rare single at last, this was made as a tribute to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards after they were imprisoned for drug offences, the Stones subsequently made their own souvenir of this incident on We Love You where you could here the cell door slam and their footsteps being led down to their cell...

I well remember this incident in the news of the time, where the editor of the Times William Rees Mogg quoted Alexander Pope...

"Who breaks a butterfly upon a wheel?"

Sherbet "Howzat" 1976 Epic EPC4574

Among the new batch of singles that arrived at my door this week was Australian band Sherbet's september 1976 no.4 UK hit HOWZAT....following England's ongoing success in the Ashes Cricket tests this seemed a somewhat appropriate tune for the week, though the very catchy chorus will spend weeks rattling around my head... :?

Sheb Wooley - The Purple People Eater MGM 1958 EX
Little Richard - Good Golly Miss Molly London 1958 Tri-centre VG+ (a whopping 25 quid!)

Simon & Garfunkel - Mrs.Robinson E.P. CBS 1969 EX+
Graham Nash - Chicago Atlantic 1971 EX+

some interesting items turned up this week ..

Craig Douglas - When my little girl is smiling (1962) cleaner version than the Drifters.

Sweets for my Sweet - The Drifters (1961) Searchers version is more musical but this one rocks.

Rubber Ball - Bobby Vee (1961) two other versions released in Jan.1961 of this song by The Avons and Marty Wilde, Bobby Vee's did the best it got to no.4.

Ernie Freeman - Spring Fever (1956) replicated from a 78 recording, Raunchy (1957) a more earthy version than Bill Justis but still charted in the top ten.

Joey Dee & the Starliters - Shout part one / part two (1962) excellent bluesey live recording split into two halves unfortunately, the Lulu pop version released two years later did much better!

Journey to the centre of the mind - The Amboy Dukes (1968) typical American piece of Psyche Rock, features Ted Nugent.

Baker Street, Night Owl - Gerry Rafferty. brought back some happy memories from the 70's.

Joe Jackson - Is she really going out with him? (1978) a really great song, a relief from all that Punk and AOR of the time ...

Stranglers - Grip / London Lady (1977) the Stranglers were not nor have never been a Punk band...were they ?

find of the week!

The Aquatones - You (1958) found a demo copy of this lovely song, quite hard to find now. Images of drive-ins, soda pop bars and large American cars abound...

Stravinsky "The Firebird" 1951 45 RPM 12" album set, Columbia Black label mono, Szell conducting the Cleveland Philharmonic. Great sound, drawback is flipping and or changing records every 11-12 minutes. Don't know where this was recorded, but the acoustics are outstanding. Sounds like a large concert hall, no "recording notes" included with this set. Estate sale find. These are older than I am, but are perfect.
