RF router grounding box. What does it do???

Post by omegabri » 15 Oct 2017 19:55

Hi everyone

Not knowing to much, and on a massive learning curve; here's my next question
(Apologies if this is in the wrong section of the forum, but wasn't sure where to post it  )

What is an RF router grounding box?
And, why not run an earth cable straight to the earth on a 3 pin plug, and simply plugging that in - without an RF router?

Forgive my lack of knowledge, if this is a stupid question

Bri :)

a router is a data handling device

RF is radio frequency (VHF and TV)

grounding box is usually associated with an electrical installation

I may be wrong but the combination of all three doesn't seem valid or useful

Russ Andrews has a reputation, some people swear by him, others at him. Does your system suffer from interference from radio or TV (or cell phone or computer) noises? Is it humming uncontrollably? Sometimes when these problems arise the remedy is adjustment of the grounding (earthing) however unless there are negative symptoms no attention is needed, the addition of one of these is unlikely to improve the quality of the sound from the system (and it seems Mr Andrews makes no claims that it does so) and so the best policy is to ignore people offering expensive accessories that claim to fix problems that may not actually exist.

Yer....My system is OK, but I just wondered what they were. I couldn't see much advantage -
at least in the price!?

Reading between the lines, it is probably a small capacitor between the two screw terminals and the mains plug earth pin, so RA is attempting to connect the wires to the earth at RF frequencies, while avoiding audio and mains frequencies earth loops

Hardly worth the price tag, I doubt

It is only going to have possible beneficial effects at MW and HF frequencies. At higher frequencies your mains socket isn't earth any more.

So the answer is ... It is a device designed to remove your money from your pocket.

Cheers,

RA has been very careful in his claims and there may well be a few cases where this RF only grounding helps eg when there is a poor switching supply on a DAC or when there is a ham HF radio operator nearby.
