Just bought a Cambridge CXA80 (excited..cant Help it , and am a little confused about which input to connect my phono preamp (amp does not have a preamp built in) to...unbalanced or balanced? The manual isn't very clear on this topic.
Seeing that your Pro-ject phono stage does not have balanced XLR outputs, you would have to use the unbalanced line level inputs on your new amp. Looking at the back of your amp, you have 4 to choose from. Take your pick.
Mind you... I too am considering a CXA80, and upon perusing the manual, I wondered about the unbalanced/balance inputs for location A1. I contacted the kind folks at Cambridge Audio support to ask whether it would be okay to connect RCA-to-XLR balanced cable from my Cambridge CP2 preamp (phono=RP3+2MBronze) to the CXA80 A1 balanced input. Cambridge responded "We would in fact recommend this as the preferred connection type for these two units." Whether there is a distinct advantage to doing this remains to be heard, but at least it is possible and should not have an adverse effect.
