I still use my excellent Audiolab 8000C preamp and 8000P power amp combo. I bought these in the mid 90's and they're still going strong. Very detailed, neutral and 'un-coloured'.

My setup is totally 90's!

Linn Axis TT
Akito Arm
Ortofon MC 15 Super 2
Townsend Seismic Sink air-filled isolation platform. (Still working fine!)
Meridian 508 CD with Sorbothane feet sitting on a heavy stone base.
Audiolab 8000C and 8000P
Rega Ela speakers on paving-slab bases.

Samson 1U-rack power conditioner. (The only 'modern' piece of kit in the system!)

Hey everyone :) I am thinking about which way I want to go with a vinyl set-up. Could I use a phono pre-amp connected directly to a power amplifier, or would it have to be either a pre-amp or integrated unit?
If so, what would the advantages and disadvantages be of such a set-up? Am wondering if I need a
pre-amplifier or if the dedicated phono-amp would be a better choice...

My Linkwitz Pluto speakers contain their own LM3886-based chip amps, one per driver. Active crossover, no passive devices between amp outputs and the individual drivers.

I use a Benchmark DAC 2 HGC as preamplifier / DAC / headphone amplifier.

Final piece of the puzzle is a Behringer DEQ2496 which I use for room correction.

Update to my recent post! I have just upgraded my Audiolab 8000P to 2x 8000M British-built Monoblocks. I found a pair of these on e-bay in great condition, originally bought as a pair with consecutive serial numbers.

I expected some improvement over the 8000P but I wasn’t expecting what I heard! Much improved, wider soundstage and somewhat fuller bass. Rega Ela’s are not known for huge bass of course, but what I’m hearing is tight and accurate sounding. Also, a very slightly less harsh top-end compared to the 8000P, which is good.

My setup is totally 90's!

Linn Axis TT (Later version)
Akito Arm
Ortofon MC 15 Super 2
Townsend Seismic Sink air-filled isolation platform. (Still working fine!)
Meridian 506 CD with Sorbothane feet sitting on a heavy stone base.
Audiolab 8000C and 8000M Monoblocks x2
Rega Ela speakers on paving-slab bases.

Samson 1U-rack power conditioner. (The only 'modern' piece of kit in the system!)

My electronics are all tube, all DIY, based on designs from the various forums. I couldn't design my own, or at least not back in the days I was building these. My amp is based on an ST-70, but very little is left of the original, and you could call it my own design since I combined a driver of one design with the output section of another, and made it work. My pre-amp is from an early version of the Aikido that John Broskie sold. He had posted an article on how it could be made to work at low-voltage, but he never tried it himself. I did, and it worked. It seems to be the preferred version these days, being sold commercially. The price of the 6GM8 tubes shot up. When I bought them they were $4 each, now they are $25 if you can find them.

Recently I installed a remote controlled attenuator in the Aikido and I was surprised at how much better it sounded. The chip controls the amount of shunt resistance so it doesn't actually sit in the signal path. I really like being able to control my system from my couch, between Alexa and the remote control I only have to get up to flip the records. "Alexa, turn on the tubes", and they start to glow...

Musical Fidelity M6 PRE/PWR.

I bought them new nearly a year now, and I have no regrets.
I have owned Luxmans, high-end Onkyo, Yamaha, Denon, Marantz amplifiers and these have been a sea-change. Powering a pair of Revel F208s in stereo mode, and as front left and right channel amplification in a Onkyo RZ810 Dolby Atmos rig via an ingenious MF pass-through switch.

Denon DP-33F TT
Pioneer Tape Deck CT-F850
Yamaha Tuner CT-1010
EPI 200C speakers

Back up Sansui AU-4900
