Marantz Receiver Phono Input Inop

Post by pmlevine » 04 Dec 2019 01:30

I have an old Marantz SR520 receiver and the phono turntable input does not work. Am I correct in thinking I can buy an external phono pre-amp, (? ART DJ Pre II Turntable Phono Preamplifier), and by-pass the receiver phono input? Will taking the turntable RCA outputs, insert these into the separate phono pre-amp inputs, then take the RCA outputs from the pre-amp and plug into either the "Aux" or "Tape" receiver inputs enable me to listen to linyl records once more?
Attached is a block diagram of the Marantz SR520.
thanks for any advice,
Philip

Agreed, but before you do this, check if your other inputs are working. Might you accidentally have activated your tape monitor?

BTW, what TT are you using? Perhaps it has a built in phono pre amp that you have to turn off?

^^^This. You want it to be on 'Source', not 'Tape'. You might also try cleaning the input selector switch contacts inside the receiver.

Just get an external phono preamp to put between your turntable, and the external/aux, or tape inputs.
