KLH Model Fifty Five Receiver.....

Post by super scope » 24 Oct 2019 01:42

Looking at a KLH Model 55 receiver. Maybe 50 bucks plus shipping, in nice condition and says everything is functioning.
Don't see much info out there.....anyone have one or know about them? Looks like 13wpc but I like these small units.
Thanks.

KLH products have a very fine reputation. I have no info on this specific product, but it would would probably live up to the company's reputation.

KLH (Kloss, Low, Hofmann) established themselves as a speaker manufacturer initially. They might, perhaps be viewed as competitors to Wharfedale, but having a more open sound than the typical for the time "muted" sound of many British manufacturers. Today, being owned by Klipsch, they should be viewed as an entry level to Klipsch quality and sound. Never wise to have junior companies better than your main line you understand. But, as noted, very little real information on their electronics lines, and at $50, should be viewed as an interesting collector item or hobby acquisition. If as described, a quite interesting find, and likely suitable for a small occasional use system. I have several similar Realistic receivers of modest output that are very capable and good sounding systems. If it appeals to you that much, I'd say go for it. Cheers!

Both fine units. Yamaha much better looking, and costly. One issue I have with the KLH, which may not bother you. I don't like have power on-off with the volume control.

The Yammy is nice at 15 wpc, but I have two words for you...BLUE...LIGHTS! :D

And...I'll bet it would sound great with some vintage KLH speakers! Check out this set-up I saw on Reddit with a Model 55 and some Model 6 speakers! =D>

One of my current 3 receivers is a Yamaha CR-2020....but I recently sold a Yamaha CR-620 that I had. The 620 was rated for 35 watts/channel but let me tell you, that thing kicked some serious butt, even with speakers that were not high efficiency. So I would say that the Yamaha receivers are underrated when it comes to stated power. And I have read some articles about bench tests that confirm that.

Also, it had the same Yamaha sound characteristics as my monster CR-2020 which means it was a very very nice sounding receiver indeed.

Aesthetically speaking, both receivers sport excellent looks !

Ooh, I think you're gonna love it, super scope...I'm a sucker for those blue lights, too!

A nice addition to the collection, in any case...While not for those into high power specs, I've heard they are good for small rooms and the sound won't fatigue you after many repeated listens...Very easy on the ears and it's got that nice sleek, European look to it, as well! Have fun with it and as I said earlier, make sure to show it in the "Vintage Receivers" thread, as well...Other than gelid's unusual-looking Model 27, we don't have much from KLH on there and it's worth showing off! :-k :D

Do bear in mind, these units tend to be more likely than average to need repair. Electrolytic capacitors are major weaknesses with KLH gear, and that was when they were 10 years old. Serviced correctly, they sound excellent.
