Which amplifier for thorens td150?

Post by Rallen » 14 Oct 2019 21:19

I like playing around with various turntables and speakers, so I always have a few of each laying around.

Since i have most of the parts anyway, im going to make a secondary vinyl setup, im not sure which amplifier to get.

Other parts are thorens td150, haglabs bugle 2 riaa and carlsson oa 51 speakers.

Any suggestions for a matching amp? Both new and vintage Will do. Doesnt have to have inbuilt riaa, since i have that already.

Thanks in advance :-)

within reason, anything. The speakers are relatively inefficient at 87db, so the amp will need to be 50 real watts or better to drive transients without running out of puff.

I'd consider a no-wire option: Bugle 2 into a BlueTooth or wi-fi transmitter to a receiver and Class D amp at each speaker

Thanks for your suggestion. I'd prefer to avoid wireless transmission though :-)

Would that be at least 2x50W or 2x25W?

Yo Rallen:

I am with A10 on this. I am not familiar with the Carlsson OA51 speakers, but if they are in the inefficient side, you will probably need a 50 watt per channel stereo amp. There are a number of inexpensive Technics amplifiers and receivers in the 40-60 watt per channel category that are readily available used for not much money, maybe $50.00 US for the amp. I put a 40 watt per channel amp into a dance studio for a friend a number of years ago. Took a couple of months, butI found a used Technics 40 WPC integrated amp for $40.00 on the Famous Auction Website, and it is still working just fine, filling a 25,000 cubic foot studio good and loud, say 80 dB. Just be sure that the amp or receiver you pick has an input labeled Phono, to take the moving magnet cartridge that will likely be on your Thorens.

BUT: If you are listening up close, say less than 10 feet from the speakers, you can get away with less power.
And good luck from the old studio-filler,

Joe Z.

Like Joe said, 50wpc. He and I are both vintage Technics fans, so no argument there either. The rest of his advice is pertinent imo - no need for me to add to it.
