Confused...phono pre-amp to active speakers

Post by zip2019 » 13 Sep 2019 09:52

Hello,

I am planning to get a phono-pre amp for my SL1200 Mk2 with a set of powered speakers. I am confused about connecting two speakers to the one output of the pre-amp. What do I need to do to connect both speakers at once? The speakers have an XLR and TRS phone jack inputs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, very confused

A pre-amp has two outputs, one (R)ight (red) and one (L)eft (white or black). You connect the (L)eft output to the left speaker and the (R)ight output to the right speaker. The outputs are usually RCA. There's RCA-XLR adapters and RCA-XLR cables available.

In my experience, powered speakers usually have a jack for the line level input from the phono preamp on one of the speakers, and the other speaker is connected to the first with regular speaker wire. You probably need a cord with rca’s on one end for the preamp, and a mini-plug for the speaker input on the other (I’m assuming the TRS input is a miniplug, but you may have some speakers unlike any I’m familiar with, so disregard if my explanation does not make sense).

Is there only one input on the speakers and not a (R)ight and (L)eft input?

What make/model speakers are you using? That info will eliminate much ambiguity.
