Adapt spring to banana plug

Post by Bob257 » 16 Jul 2019 15:40

Is there an adaptor made that will allow a 4mm banana plug to be used with the older spring clip connection?

Hi

Russ Andrews sell one https://www.russandrews.com/us/spring-c ... 049990012/. I'm sure there must be others, too.

I have bought cheap banana sockets from the local discount electronic supply store, ans stripped the bottom parts off, leaving a bare screw that will fit into the spring clip. This arrangement is not structurally strong, but it is a quick fix.

Cheers,
Alec

Have you considered changing the spring terminals for some 5 way binding posts?

If they are on speakers it's very easy. Parts express has a variety (round and square cups) of pre-mounted banana jacks. If they're on your amp/receiver it usually requires drilling out some rivets. Fortunately those spring terminals are usually very close to the size of binding posts.

FWIW: I have immense dislike for those spring terminals.

Thanks JoeE SP9
What I'd like is a speaker selector that will accept banana plugs. I used a 2mm banana plug where the back accepted a 4mm banana plug on the speakers. Any idea of somewhere that I can find a selector that accepts banana plugs (4mm). I had connected the 2mm plugs but they weren't that stable for sure! I now have wire ferrules crimped which are "ok" but...

I didn't see any that controlled 4 sets of speakers with banana female connectors to put banana plugs into. Most of them were spring clip

You didn't mention that you wanted to connect and switch between four pairs of speakers.
Exactly what are you tying to do?

Do be advised that you are not likely to be able to drive more than one pair of speakers at a time, partially due to speaker impedances sometimes are uneven. So if you have, say, a pair of speakers that measure at 4 ohms, you should not try driving two pairs of speakers at a time, because you might exceed safety factor for your amp or receiver. Hope this helps.
