Smallest Amp

Post by Bluechilli » 12 Jun 2019 23:54

Hi
What’s the smallest amp available that is good on a tight budget. I saw some called Cyrus but too pricey. I want a simple slick modern look with just the turntable on display ideally

Get a TT with a built in phono stage and a pair of powered speakers.

Maybe like these? U-turn Orbit basic turntable with built in phono preamp -with Audioengine A2+ self powered speakers.

No affiliation what-so-ever. Posted as an example.

NAD D 3020

That looks great.
If you can put up with a separate phono stage a Denon RCD-XX dab are good units and you get radio and cd player to boot.
I have a RCD-37 dab because I like to listen to radio too and have a separate Cambridge phono stage. Onkyo & Teac do similar things.

It seems that the Essential 2 does not have a built in phono preamp. In addition, those Wharfedale's are unpowered. Therefore you will need an amplifier with a built in phono stage.

PS Audio Sprout100
https://www.psaudio.com/products/sprout ... amplifier/

It has a built-in phono-stage, and also a DAC as well as BlueTooth connectivity if needed. BT comes in handy if you want to pair it with your smartphone for Pandora, Spotify, etc. This new version has output of 50WPC into 8 ohms, and 100WPC into 4 ohms. Your Wharfedales are 6 ohm, so would get something around 75WPC.

The original Sprout has half the output of the new 100, and of course they are a little cheaper.

Hi

No need to spend as much as that! I imagine the Sprout is cheaper in the USA. Project have the Stereo Box S Phono for £220, which is pretty small and should do everything you need if you don't require digital inputs.

The NAD D 3020 v2 (the v1 had no phono input) mentioned above is more powerful and versatile, though it does cost £400.

Hmmm I wonder what are like? They look good for what I want. I can always upgrade if I feel that I get hooked by vinyl for now I need to be dragged away from Spotify I guess
