Meanwhile, I concur with the idea of Ortofon OM10 or 20, a classic match esp 'cos of Dual's low-mass arm (ps is it S1, 2, 3, or 4?). I'd also change the belt for a new one as a matter of course ...

I'm pretty sure it's an S1 but details were sketchy.

It was, in the end, just a really good price so even if when it arrives, it needs some fettling, it'll still be worth it (famous last words).

Re: upgrading the cart/stylus. Would you recommend changing both or will changing the stylus suffice?

Regarding the belt, I see a lot of variety in price online. Presumably some are knock-offs or, at least, not as good. Is there a preferred supplier or anything else I should bear in mind?

Thanks

Well, if it was me and given budget I would just replace the stylus and upgrade later, and I would try and get a genuine belt if possible. As far as suppliers go, I can’t really advise on that one though hopefully someone here can

Thanks VVL - that makes sense.

EDIT: I've started a new thread under the turntable/tonearm subforum to see if it might catch anyone else's eye. Thanks.

I had the NAD 306 for many years and loved it, it is a more powerful and more detailed sounding version of the 304, with sharper focus for the soundstage. But NAD is all about more of capturing the musical wholeness and flow than microdetailing. For cleanest sound, keep the Soft Clipping to OFF. When it's ON, the sound gets more warm and less detailed. Still, I would say that the Rotel has a purer sound. But NAD is very enjoyable.

Another one to track down is the Audiolab 8000A, the original classic.

This is, I'll admit, making me extremely impatient to get everything up and running and start discussing these things with you all!

:) My first amp was a NAD 3020i, the next one a NAD 306, then I changed brand to Alchemist and got me an Axiom and now I have a Nexus. (I still have the Axiom, but just not connected in my prime hifi-setup, but I do love it... It's a lovely little 30 watt amp).

Hi

All three items have now arrived and, after a bit of a song/dance, they're set-up.

Problem: Despite both being connected identically, one speaker is playing fine but the other plays no music but makes a massive humming the minute its wires are connected.

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Thanks.

Think I've isolated problem to the red phono connector from the tt to the amp.

Does attached look right / wrong to expert eyes?

Thanks

Common problem. Think these leads are captive on the S1. How are you with a soldier iron?

Well, I don't own one and I've never used one in my life. Hmm.

Time to start boning up...

Or are there alternatives?
