Speaker issue , please Help !

Post by Karlamela7 » 08 Feb 2018 23:43

Hello everyone! So here's the deal, I own a Garrard SP25 MK IV turntable. It is over 40 years old and I have fixed most problems myself (e.g. auto function on the tonearm) but there is one thing I can not comprehend. I have its original speakers and both of them work fine but the problem is that one of the line-ins (the Left) doesn't work. when I plug a speaker in, there is no sound other than that buzzing you hear meaning there is electricity in it, but no music plays.
I had it looked at by an electrician who said the voltage in the L line-in is good, so why isn't there sound?
Can anyone Help me with this problem? Thank you all so much!

What are we talking about here?
The Garrard does NOT have speakers!
You must mean it's connected to an amp or receiver phono input.
I'd check the speaker wires (cables) for connections (plugs , continuity?)

Of course, sorry, I am obviously not an expert but I do have it connected to 2 speakers. Both speakers work fine, but one of the inputs on the back of the turntable where you hook it up is not working. In other words, produces no sound.
The speaker cables are also functional, I checked that first using the input that works.

Check the connections of the cable at the turntable side (I think it's a captive connection, no plug) at the back of the turntable, so inside maybe a connection problem.

Do you have an amplifier/receiver? You can't directly connect a TT to a pair of speakers. Well, actually you can however you'll get no sound.

A picture and the exact model number of your gear would be very helpful.

Ok, so I tried to attach photos of the turntable but they were too big to be attached here so I put in a link to the exact model. You can see the back of it with the input for the "speakers" , the connection type and everything. Does this Help anyone? Hope this makes things clearer. Thank you all for commenting and trying to Help me!

OK, according to what your pictures show you actually have a one piece system with a TT and receiver in one chassis. It would seem you may have a problem with one channel of your gear. You could try cleaning all the switches and controls with Caig De-Oxit.

Ok, thank you very much for making things clear.

So I should open it up and try to clean the area around the channel?

Open it up and clean the switches and rotary controls. Caig DeOxit is IMO the best thing to spray into switches and controls. However, any contact cleaner spray may do the job. If you don't know how to do this perhaps a friend or neighbor could assist you.
