Fitting an SME V to my Gyro...top tips requested please!

Post by gazjam » 17 Jun 2016 09:02

As above,
Instruction manual is very specific which is fantastic, but wondering if theres any other tips out there to make it go smoothly.

My Cart is an MC, a Dydavector XX2 mk2.
I say that as I've been told the damping trough really is only for MM carts.
Also, I'm fitting a Gert Pedersen armboard upgrade as well.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. :)

My dealer sets my Gyro/SME V up( and will do so when l get the double spyder)and what l have noticed he always connects the arm cable to the tonearm :D before fitting the tonearm- saves on time and aggravation. :D Other than that just follow instructions then tweak from there.

My tip is to just follow the SME V instruction manual then everything will be just fine. The manuals made for the SME arms are very pedagogic and thorough so it is very hard to fail IMHO. Sounds great that you've GP armboard upgrade kit as it's a no brainer in many ways. I've a SME IV without the damping trough so I don't know the difference between using/not using it. Please give it a try and let your ears decide which sounds the best.

I use a MC cart and have the damping trough filled (though the paddle is barely submerged in the silicone) and everything sounds great. The trough was left unfilled initially but things sound much better now filled- though I attribute that to phono upgrade and I'm not going to clean out the trough just for a comparison test!
