Should i upgrade my michel gyro se

Post by danielboone » 01 May 2016 21:18

Had my gyro se for about 2 years now set up is :
gyro se with rega rb303 tone arm, goldring 2300 cartridge and stylus.
tricord D+ and Dino3 stage and psu.
music fidelity amp m3i
into b+w cm 8.
i understand that there are some upgrades that should improve my set up . (more imaging definition bass clarity etc . ) i.e. mitchell hr prs and mitchell record clamp.Different arms.(dunno which )
The alternative is px or sell the mitchell and buy something else .
lin lp12 with are s/hand but pricy (3k)
or mitchell orbe ,vip
or similar .

would be grateful of any advice or thoughts please.

One of the great things about the Gyro is a long upgrade path, two upgrades that l always suggest for not a lot of money ( in Hifi terms) is the Orbe clamp and Pedersen armboard mod, both great VFM, HR PSU, then is t is endless money go round SME, Audionote arm, better cartridge, phono stage.............

You may well be surprised about how good a well sorted Gyro can sound.

Good luck.

I presume you do use the normal Michell record clamp that is part of a Gyro SE TT :?:

A clamp on a TecnoDec, Gyro and Orbe is mandatory IMO.
I had to buy one separately (is not standard with TecnoDec) but never looked back and ALWAYS use the clamp since (much better bass etc)

Thanks all, I have not got any record clamp and most seem in favour of the Orbe one . As for the Pederson ,arm board ....is it easy to install ? i`m getting on a bit and suffer from shaky hands . Can any one point me towards details of installation please?

Update found info on audiomods website . thank you.

Yes it's nearly as simple as putting an armboard with original Michell parts on the Gyro. Here is a link:

Please do yourself a favour and ASAP buy and use a Michell record clamp.
The standard one costs GBP 35 and the Orbe one costs GBP99 (~3x!)

I would start buying a standard one and see where the sound goes from there.
It will make a huge difference in bass definition and clarity :)

Strange that you do not have a Michell clamp with your Gyro (belongs to the package)

Just adding another voice to the chorus here: You need the clamp.

HOW you use the clamp is as as important as having it. The platter retainer (the silvery clamp that holds the platter to the spindle) should be recessed-side down, then the felt washer, then the record, then finally the clamp. This setup in this exact configuration provided the best clamping solution that I've ever found on any deck that I've used. Any change to this will have a negative impact, either from less-effective flattening or warps, or of deadening the sound. Yes, you will have to push down on the clamp to get it to stay put, but it's worth it. It's also the best bang-for-the-buck improvement that you could possibly make with that setup, given that it's so inexpensive, and the only clamping solution that has ever provided what I felt was an improvement rather than degradation.

Beyond that, look into platform improvements (good gains can be had for minimal money if you're careful), better cart, better arm, etc., but those get into diminishing returns. Clamp first, though. It's essential on these decks.

If you are keeping your Gyro- just buy The Orbe Clamp it really is rather good.

Looks cool too.
