New Gyro with SME 3009 tonearm

Post by goldjack » 15 Jan 2018 21:27

Looking for opinions as to if this would work.

Have decided that a gyrodec is the way to go for my next Turntable and wondered if it would be crazy to buy the base deck and fit an old bit great condition sme 3009 to it and spend the money the entry tonearm would have cost (about my total budget) on a better cartridge instead. I love the look of the sme 3009 and it gave a great sound on my old Focus One, but not sure if it would really match up to a more modern entry level arm for this price of deck. I’ll admit it’s probably an unusual combo, and there is a high degree of sentiment attached to the tonearm, but looking for opinions as to if it would be a good option??

I too am very fond of SME and from an engineering point of view, I believe they are hard to beat. I recently purchased an impeccable Orbe (full version with case and cover) and it came with a Rega RB250 tonearm from Origin Live, to which I fitted an Audio Technica AT150MLX. Sounded very full and detailed but I wanted to compare my SME 3009 Series II improved with fixed headshell. I ordered the SME base and the installation was quick and simple and worth the effort. Although the 3009 was an improvement over the Rega, I still want to replace it with either a 309 or if possible, the series IV, either of which will be more in keeping with the technology of the Orbe.
Hope this helps.

In the early 80s, before the arrival of Rega's RB series, there were quite a few GyroDecs with SME 3009 arms. So it is not unusual, but definitely retro.

Thanks for the replies. I might go for the deck and use the sme 3009 as a starter arm and go from there!! Always good to have an upgrade on the horizon!!
