Anybody know anything about this Tonearm? Systemdek (pics)

Post by MuthaFunk » 10 Mar 2009 21:59

I've been looking for specific info on this paticular OEM arm from Systemdek. Mostly I'd love to get the arm mass for cartridge matching but any info would be great. I can't find anything on the net...

Hi,
It came from the same OEM supplier as the arm used on the AR and Rotel RP855 turntables (and others).

I haven't got the specs for the Systemdek arm yet but for the AR it's effective length 229mm, overhang 16mm and effective mass 12g. The RP855 specs were overhang 16mm, cartridge weight range 3 to 9g and it came fitted with an AT110E cartridge as standard.

AR Tonearm
6930

Rotel RP855
1076

1075

Regards,
JaS

I can't agree with your info on this, Jas, regretfully! (yet of course, respectfully!) ;=})

I've been searching for info on this arm, on a Systemdek II (yes, the circular model), to set up a cartridge on it (just the Ortofon FF15XE Mk2 it came with) that I took off, now have offered to re-install for the chap that I've (reluctantly, but must need pay bills!) sold it to... and measuring, I get different data... like, approximately:

Headshell angle (offset) appears, with my plastic adjustable angle protractor, to be pretty close (closest!) to the 23.45 degrees of this Jelco arm, http://www.jelco-ichikawa.co.jp/tone-sa250st.htm
(but if you look at the very end of the preceding page,
http://www.jelco-ichikawa.co.jp/e_tone_arm.htm
you'll see the 250ST listed as 21.45, instead of 23.45; clearly a misprint!)

Bad information abounds, as does misinformation; one must really double-triple check!

Yet too - and so I don't think it corresponds with Linn either - I (OK, roughly!) measure the spindle - pivot center distance as ~ 211mm (this is this Systemdek arm bolted to a Systemdek II armboard/turntable) and the range of possible approx stylus-pivot distances (in the headshell slots) as ~ 231-235mm, way out of line with suggested Linn or other Jelco arms...

So I can't necessarily believe the previous suggestions...

(and as an aside; having downloaded various protractors, I find on printing result measurement that my donated Brother monochrome laser printer is not accurate(ly set up) - in an earlier job as a technician for Ricoh we did calibrate (well, I was on refurbishment but sometimes on new set up) accurate measurement reproduction, but these were service adjustments, only accessible through an arcane menu/button sequence, and proprietary; certainly not easily available to the average end-user, so it'a worth checking that out too.)

Any ideas?

Maybe I'll just use a simple/stupid protractor, yet to do;- I'm just astonished that this Systemdek arm (exactly as pictured above) doesn't seem (to me, so far! - maybe I'm stupid too!?) to correspond to either current Jelco or previously listed Linn arm geometry dimensions, despite advices given!

Regards,

~ Ross

Anyway, presumably this was a standard set-up at some time...

So why are my measurements so different from the presumed Jelco (which vary according to model) or Linn?

Maybe we have to go back to first principles on this...
I'm not sure that I can trust a generic given 15-15-18mm overhang, for instance!

Will have to find an accurate printer to check with templates...

Oops, I meant 16-18mm overhang, etc.

Finally realised the problem & solution; some previous owner had (changing a cartridge? thinking "longer is better"?) had evidently loosened the mini allen head machine screw for the headshell, and when re-installing, had left it 6mm out from the end of the arm-tube, instead of flush.

I'd already wondered, poked a wand up to the end of the arm-tube & found the head-shell 6mm proud of it, with the rubber damping way back there;- it was the macro close-up earlier in this thread that clued me in to & confirmed this too;- thanks!

So loosening & moving back to where it stopped, and re-adjusting horizontal, got it back to around 229mm, near the end of the slots, instead of the 234+mm I was metaphorically tearing my hair out over;- er, struggling with, above!

That was the extra 6mm length that made it seem impossible!

So, I think now, yes, a Linn equivalent template, an 18mm overhang, ~229mm effective length, 211mm mounting pivot-spindle, headshell approx 24 degrees - obviously rounded, & slightly inexact!

I have this arm on my SD II. Works a charm.

However, the damper has lost it's effect. Have tried to re-lube it with a very thick loctite silicone grease, but that only helped a little bit.

Anybody knows which compound to use for the damper?

Jelco made tonearms for a number of other manufacturers. For this, look under Sumiko, in the library.
You can use the "Stupid" protractor with it, or anything. It works well.
Presuming that dr_jones is referring to the lifter, silicon oil, about CST 300,000 should do. If you know anybody with R/C race cars, they might lend you a drop or two.

Cheers,
Alec
